Why don't delivery guys ever have change? etc. — Brooklynian

Why don't delivery guys ever have change? etc.

Subject: Why don't delivery guys ever have change? & etc.

In the future, I will always have to remember to get small bills at the bodega because delivery guys will never have change for $20, even though you rarely can order from any menu that's less than $10.

Why don't delivery guys ever have $1s or $5s, but instead rolls of $20 bills and look at you *shocked* when you don't have exact change for the bill?

Then they get annoyed at *you*.

Very frustrating.

  • Can't say this has ever happened to me, personally...whose deliverymen does this happen with?
  • I agree. This angers me to no end. The only person I've ever had this problem with is this one dude from Maggie Brown's.

Not having change is virtually the only thing a delivery guy can do that makes me give a bad tip. I always tip well, except if they can't give me good change. In that case they get whatever tip is left over after I pay, good or bad.

You're going on deliveries? Get some friggin change. This dude told me twice "his shift just started". So he's telling me he went out on his shift without any change? Riiiiight.

    Cabbies do it sometimes too.

    Arg.
  • I have NEVER had this happen to me, can you tell me what restaurants you are ordering from?

Also, if they did tell me that, I would definitely think they were lying and I would refuse to pay them.
  • Never had that happen to me.
  • Like Boygabriel, I always order from MB, and the guy NEVER has change. Same guy, always laughs when he comes to my door.

Other place I always order from is Cafe Lafayette. Again, guys never have change. Worst part the last time was that the guy didn't speak a word of English and when I said slowly "go to the bodega on the corner" he said, "basement??" :( It took him a half hour to find change, and when I then requested packs of ketchup, he literally threw them at me

I don't think it's the restaurants fault, as I think they lease delivery services.

Another unrelated pet peeve of mine is service guys wanting to use my bathroom. This happened in succession from the broker showing me my new apartment (and not closing the door all of the way), the mover needing to use the one in my old apartment, the the Time Warner guy setting up my internet cable :o I think this must just happen to women for some reason.
  • no, the cable guys ALWAYS need to take a dump while they are there. At least that has been my experience.
I don't know why. It must come over them as an overpowering urge, the same feeling male skiers get on top of a mountain.
Another good one is a moving team. I hired moishes moving one time and needed a haz-mat team after they were done to tackle my bathroom :(
  • Supergirl and Guest: I have NEVER, in my 35 years of life, had a deliveryman tell me he did not have change, OR, have a service man ask me to use my bathroom. That is utterly crazy.
  • I've had it happen once or twice but it's their freakin fault so I've made them go and get change, and they've complied. I'm not going to give them a 100% tip and they're not going to carry the food all the way back to the restaurant, so it's not like they have much choice.
  • Subject: Change

If you are going to order take out, why don't YOU have change the next time? Like, avoid the problem altogether ?

Delivery and change is such a mundane issue. How can you sit on your anka-danka have food delivered to you yet complain about change? C'mon guys/gals...

I've seen delivery guys get verbally abused a few times, its really ugly.
  • Oh, yeah - this JUST happened to me on Saturday. Greasy Chinese spot - and the guy was like, I don't have anything but $6 - I needed $10 back. And yeah, he gave me that SHOCKED look like I was at fault, then feigned looking around and said he would "get me back next time."

Sure - holding my breath. Please - delivery dudes should AT LEAST have change for a $20 - the most COMMON DENOMINATION in circulation.

clearly you don't order from maggie brown's :)
  • the change i can get with, but USING MY BATHROOM?! you must be joking. i know i would have the most exasperated look on my face if a delivery, cable or any other kind of guy i don't know asked to use my bathroom. sounds kinda dangerous, too if you ask me.
