Stores/eateries closing on 7th Ave south of 9th st?
So whats up with all these stores and eateries closing south of 9th street on 7th avenue?
There are a TON of closed shops, yet people here, myself included,
would love to see new shops and new places to eat.
Whats up with that place on 9th St between 13th and 12th? Its huge, and has been vacant for years. Used to be a bar/restaurant I believe.
How hard would it be for the owners to lower the rent and just rent these places out?
Confused.

Really? What's closed? I know about the little cheese shop, but it's already re-opened as another little cheese shop. I can't think of anything else that's closed recently. And actually, things have been opening further south, between 16th & Windsor Place.
Just between 9th Street and 15th, there are plenty of places to eat on or just off 7th -- Applewood, Steinhof, Little D, Beet, Olive Vine, Leila, Anthony's -- some of those are even good. This end of the Slope is so much more commercial than it was ten years ago when I moved here. Actually, my husband lived on 13th Street when I met him in '91 and there was almost no commercial activity south of 9th Street. -
I too have noticed a lot of closed stores. On 5th between 11th and 12th the suitcase/pokemon/umbrella store just closed. The bakery has been closed for some time, a jewelery store is closed, a 99 cent store closed, etc. What I would really like to see in the South Slope is an amazing produce store. There is no where to get good produce around here.

I think we'll see a lot of turnover on 5th ave over the next few years. Stores like the ones you mention will not be able to survive with the new competition that will come in. 5th ave is starting to get more nightlife, i.e. Commonwealth, Royal, Buttermilk, and is also attracting banks, Wamu, BofA, Doral, and a renovated Northfork are all new. There are rumors of a place called Sidecar opening, Cafe Regular has been doing well, etc. Brooklyn Properties and Fillmore have both opened up offices recently.
The 99 cent stores and 14k jewelry stores won't last as these other businesses can afford to pay more and are more in line with what the changing residents are looking for.
As for 7th Ave, there has been a lot of progress but I'm also surprised at the length that some of these stores have been vacant. However, the real reason is that the owners don't want to rent them as there are plenty of businesses that would jump on them yet they've been empty for years. The old See Gar, See Bar/Deliberations/Pizza Rest place has been vacant for probably 5 years now after the owners failed multiple times at running their own restaurant/bars. The space across from Steinhoff has been vacant for 10+ years, the renovation from a number of years back only resulted in for rent signs but they obviously don't want to rent it. There are others like this where the current owners have owned the buildings for years and don't really want to be landlords.
Give it time, it will continue to change. There's been a ton of progress already and this is the type of thing that snowballs. -

That building is truly one of the ugliest buildings in Park Slope if not all of Brooklyn. Every time I look at it, I'm just appalled by its hideousness. The "renovation" went on for years -- I'm not sure it's actually finished -- isn't there still empty space behind part of the facade? I'm not surprised no one wants to rent the commercial space -- and it serves the owner right for doing such a crappy, half-ass renovation. -
That is a crappy renovation job they did. I don't know how some of these buildings get away with it. The formerly Grace is still empty. The corner place across from Red Hot, still don't know what it will be, no place seems to last there very long. They are fixing up the store near the train on 7th bet. 9 & 10th. There is a new sandwich, falafel type, place near Rootstock opening up..bet. 7+8 street. Still waiting on the pet store near C-Town.

Oh, it makes me so happy to see more stuff coming South. I only recently moved there, but my friends were over on 21st and 7th for years - I remember the walk to the subway seeming like it took forever since it was so residential for so many blocks, save a couple of delis here and there.

ok, so here is the biggest news i've heard in a long time. D'agostino, yes you read right is going out of business. How about Trader Joes. People always tell me, if I want a retailer, and I know an appropriate spot, I should contact them. What would you like to see in that spot?
-
seriously, kirby? when is that supposed to take place? and are you talking about the whole company, or just the PS branch? wow.
-
I can only comment on the 7th ave. location, but seriously, what do you want to see there? Should I start a new thread?
-
dagostinos charged 98 thousand dollars for everything.
along with everyone else, i want trader joes. -
How can we get a Trader Joe's here ASAP?
-
I was speaking to an architect who is working on the building on the corner of 13th and 5th (old Salvation Army spot). I was telling her how I would love a Trader Joes or produce market to go in there, and she told me to contact the company and tell them there is a great spot and a lot of interest in Trader Joes coming to the neighborhhood. It's worth a try.

Trader Joes would clean up in Park Slope!
-
Ant their wine shop would rule!
-
i agree that trader joe's would be ideal in park slope. i do, however think it would be better on 7th rather than on 5th because of the general higher density of people. i think the key food on 7th would be the perfect location for a trader joe's. that dagostino on 7th seems too small. i'd be happy to try contacting them as well. it seems like a no-brainer....they'd make a killing.

Where is the supermarket in South Slope? I don't ever go to supermarkets because they are all so far from where I am. Fresh Direct is my only real option - give me a Trader Joes! Give it! Put it on 7th and Prospect Ave! Who needs a school there?
-
well, if dag's is leaving then "hell's, yes" to trader joe's! it's true that the spot is a little small, but i have been in small TJ's before (in CT) so i'm sure they could make the space work. plus, the bus stop is right there, so transportation issues for a store without a parking lot is automatically resolved. let's us know how to contact them and i'd be happy to...

well, if you are living the prospect & 7th area, the closest supermarket to you is Key Food on prospect 'tween 10th & 11th. -

How about a little more info on the D'ag closing? I did a quick search but couldn't find anything outside of this thread. Anyone have a link to a source? God would a Trader Joe's be amazing on 7th.
-
A longtime 7th Ave. merchant told me that D'Ag is closing. He also assured me that Grace and Craftsman will not be a Dunkin Donuts, and he knew that the ATM was going in on 9th and 7th before it went in.
Howdy, Stranger!
