busted in a bizarre, race-based assumption

last week a good friend laughingly (and then she told almost everyone else I know that I'm a moron) clued me in that Drexciya are/were (one is dead) two black guys from Detroit. since the one album of theirs I've listened to a lot has a decidedly industrial bent, I had assumed that Drexciya was a white guy from Eastern Europe.

this is very similar to my completely incredulous reaction to the news that Coil are/were (Jhonn Balance is dead) queer (which wasn't a secret at all - I just never figured it out).

being oblivious is sometimes really weird. but, in honor of these discoveries, I think I'm going to listen to only Drexciya and Coil for a few months. I encourage you all to do the same. I think it'll be cleansing post-"Why must I cry?" viewing.

did you see the video for Coil's "Tainted Love"?
the honey-dripping AIDS metaphor music video for "Tainted Love"?

the panic/tainted love EP was the first Coil CD I ever bought. and I thought it was really awesome that they were donating all of the profits from the sale to foundations researching AIDS cures. and no, I somehow didn't connect this to them being queer at all. hell, I barely blinked at the pictures of Jhonn and Peter smearing shit on each other in celebration of the release of scatology. if I didn't know better, this would obviously be willful blindness.

I was pleased that throbbing gristle was gay. who could tell, really?
I was more or less out of that kind of music by the time of this shit smearing of which you speak, but it reminded me of the happy image of the Slits album cover

Two of my boys take piano lessons at a record store that is covered with old album covers. One day, one of them discovered the Slits album while waiting for his lesson and I was treated to thirty minutes of "Why are they naked?" "Is that mud?" and my favorite "What's a slit?". Now all one has to do is whisper the word "slit" to the other and hours of giggles ensue.

    Ladies, PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!!!

I thought Genesis P. Orridge--or whatever his name is--was bi and shacked up or married to that chick in the band.

    Sorry, homeowner. I couldn't resist.
  • wow..I am stunned I can't believe you guys are chatting about some of my fave bands. Anybody listen to Neubauten, Foetus or Virgin Prunes?

Last I heard Genesis P. O had breast implants
  • thalia wrote: Last I heard Genesis P. O had breast implants
    That should be just lovely.

Do you know if Jim Thirlwell still plays around town these days? Last time I saw him was in the crowd at wigstock at random, and before that, he was on tour in Scandinavia.
  • lol..I used to be such a Foetus groupie...I've not seen im in yrs..but he's always around involved in various music projects or djing somewhere..he does the music for one of those Adult Swim cartoons on the cartoon network

    ever check out the Swans?

    Venture Brothers..thats the cartoon

and here I was thinking you guys were hella boring..just chatting the same old things about your neighbourhoods..over and over again..~lol~
  • neubauten is one of my favorite bands ever. and the last time I saw foetus was well over 10 years ago in beantown.

the whole scene in nyc is so weird, though, these days. the last industrial show I went to (a few weeks ago) was really ebm stuff. the djs in the other rooms were playing old U2 and lcd soundsystem. it was pretty confusing.
  • The thing is... in theory this is some of my all time favorite music, but it's rare that I'd actually put it on, especially if there are other people around. Skinny Puppy and after-dinner digestion just don't seem to go together for most people for some reason. And I'd have a hard time dragging the housespouse along to another Foetus gig after last time. We really enjoyed seeing Laibach the other year though...
  • wellwhodathunkit.....

I saw neubauten when they were here a couple of yrs ago..completely lucked out..went to get the tix the day prior and they were sold out..went to hang out at the Irving to see if anyone had an extra ticket to unload..no luck there...and i refuse to deal with scalpers.. i was hanging out in front of the bar next door and the bouncers offered to let me in free...i tell ya that was one of my best moments ever

I'm an oldster..have not checked out anything new in nyc for some time now..whatz ebm?

i like rammstein...good to work out to..but even they're kinda soft...i may see them next time they perform here

    I hear ya..
.at that neubauten show the bouncers let in me and the guy I was seeing..we were planning to do something else if i did not get the tx..he had no intention of actually attending the show...so the bouncers let both of us in..and he left after 10 mins.. did not lessen my enjoyment at all..i was like..bubye ~lol~
  • last night, post HH, I decided to listen to the land of rape and honey. it was actually pretty relaxing.

but yeah, when I'm not listening to really loud, irritating techno or industrial music, I'm listening to coil which, come on - the ape of naples is fucking genius.

ebm is an industrial sub-genre. "serious" industrial fans claim to hate it but all secretly love it. :) oldster stuff is front 242 or nitzer ebb. the newer stuff, frankly, isn't quite as good. stuff like covenant and new wolfshein just is painful to listen to (except for a few, notable tracks). one of my boston-based friends runs an industrial label, so sometimes she comes to nyc when one of her bands is on tour and I end up at the show. the bands are ok, but just ... well. there's a reason that people love headhunter.
  • ebm is apparently a name for all that stuff I knew but didn't know was called ebm.

I haven't seen Neubaten since the early 90s, had no idea they were still banging about. It was truly one of the best live acts I've been witness to.

Ditto Rammstein, but they're a kind of joke band, and also very much after the fact, as is anything from the 90s in my view.

What's an oldster? Kids these days with their R&B, they just don't understand. Oops, think my back is playing up again, gotta go lie down and day-dream that I'm out headbanging in Berlin, or nose-bleeding in Rotterdam.
  • the only rammstein song I like is that awful you smell so good song. one of my german pals keeps trying to yousendit the video to me. sadly, it just isn't working.
  • I saw Nitzer Ebb at the Meadowlands in 1990 warming up for Jesus and Mary Chain and Depeche Mode. I think Nitzer Ebb was the best part of the show. I usually hate stadium shows, but that was awesome.
