Parking on the sidewalk?
How does the car rental place on Union (btwn 6th + 7th, near the co-op) get away with parking cars on the sidewalk? It's quite annoying, considering that they are right next door to a huge parking garage. Do they have some sort of special permit, or just a special "agreement" with the traffic dept?
I've also noticed cars parked on the sidewalk near the Tea Lounge, which seem to belong to members of some kind of BMW club that has a small garage next to the Tea Lounge.

You sure it's not FDNY guys from the firehouse on that block? They have permits that allow them to do this.

I don't think it is, I've seen the guy from the car rental office doing it, as well as a very short man who I don't think is a fireman. Today, someone pulled up on the sidewalk, drove to the front of the rental office and honked at the guy inside. I'm not 100% positive, but it doesn't seem like it's the firemen who are doing this.

Years ago I was leaving the coop (I am no longer a member) and a rental car was backing up into me. I tried to report them, and find out the legality of the sidewalk parking, and I got nowhere.

I've seen tickets on the windshields of the rental cars there. They probably just consider it a cost of doing business. (I stopped renting there when the attendant told me to park on the sidewalk.)
I wish they would tow them....
The firemen also park on the sidewalk, which shouldn't be allowed unless there's a fire, IMO. Of course, if you look at any police station you'll see hundreds (if not millions) of cars parked on the sidewalk around it, so it's hard to imagine the police making any effort to enforce the law here. -

Millions!! That is a lot of cars on a sidewalk. -
try going down to 15th between 2nd and third. all car repair places, all with cars onto sidewalks on both sides facing into the streets, and not a cop to be found to enforce something as minor as alternate day parking.
Howdy, Stranger!
