Bagel Hole 400 7th ave SUCKS!!!!

This place is the most pathetic bagel shop I've ever been to. I have tried to give them chance after chance to make a decent bagel, I don't even mind that none of the employees speak English or know how to work a cash register, in fact, I don't even mind the confused look they give you after you say "plain bagel with cream cheese," I mean, it is a bagel shop and you'd think that would be part of the training but no, they have to look around at each other for a while then have a little back and forth in Spanish to understand what I mean, which usually includes having one of them ask me again what I want. But I can handle that, what I am sick of are all the bagels I open once I get home or to work that either have 2 pounds of cream cheese pouring out of the paper or so little that it looks like it's been buttered cause it's spread so thin. It's places like this that really give Mexicans a bad name and wish the dirty white guy in the back, who speaks with such a Brooklyn accent it almost gives white people a bad name, would get rid of all the stupid retards working there and hire one person who knows how to tie their own shoes and has at least finished their ESL course to run the counter. It'd probably save him money and I'm sure the service would be MUCH better.

  • Very interesting, since Bagel Hole is widely acknowledged to make some of the best bagels in the city (the best, IMO). Nothing you said even addresses the quality of the bagels at all, but seems more like an intolerant tirade against people who don't speak English well. The issue of the amount of cream cheese might be a legitimate complaint, but it's hard to take you seriously when you present it in such ugly terms.
  • I used to stop there every morning on my way to work. Never encountered any of the issues that you described. The guys who worked there were very friendly and nice, and they remembered what kind of bagel I always got. Maybe the communication problem is on your end?

I do think their bagels have gone downhill in the past couple of years. But the problem of excessive cream cheese seems to be universal to bagel stores. You can solve this by telling them how you want it.
  • I actually noticed the issues the OP was mentioning last weekend when I was in the store. SOmeone in front of me was trying to order a dozen bagels and the girl just couldn't understand "poppy, sesame, etc". You would think that would be a requirment for working in a bagel store. After he left, they were talking and I could tell that she gave him the wrong order.

I also agree that the bagels have gone downhill. They're becoming too dense or something. I used to love them for the crispy outside crust, and fluffy inside. That's what's so hard to find nowadays. Now it just seems to be dense all the way through. I still like it better than La Bagel though.
  • i was there this morning and absoluetly experienced none of what you are talking about. the people working there were friendly and i only asked once for my bagel with scallion cream cheese. you, my friend seem to have some issues with those from south of the border.
  • annoyed, i'm with carnivore. racist and uncalled for.

everyone else, how come nobody in NYC (except terrace, i will add) knows what a "schmear" is. the term came from nyc, likely brooklyn.

schmear. say it with me. schmear.

Maybe it's a different group working on the weekend?

    Yes, that's it exactly.

I agree they've gone downhill, although I think they remain the best. They were never fluffy, though, I think they've always been more chewy than fluffy.
You might like the bagels at Terrace Bagels on PPW in Windsor Terrace. They are also excellent. I like their mini bagels best, because they're closer to the proportions of the original true bagels, and thus preserve the proper ratio of crust to inside.
  • My absolute favorite bagel place in the neighborhood is further down on 5th ave- The Bagel Factory. I stop there almost everyday on my way to the Prospect Ave R train... great bagels, great coffees and service... All the people that work there are Mexican, but they speak english well are really good at what they do- and super friendly. I HATE when they load cream cheese on, so I always say "with a LITTLE bit of cream cheese" and sign the symbol for little bit with my hands to let them know I mean it :)
  • PS. I haven't been to Bagel Hole in like 2 years since the last time I ordered a bagel, it looked like BEARD shavings (stubble-size) were baked onto the bagel and in the cream cheese. Prior to that odd experience, I didn't mind their bagels.

Yeah, the beard shavings bagels weren't very popular, so they took that variety off the menu soon after they were introduced.

it's posts like this that give guest posting a bad name.
  • I got a chuckle out of Annoyed's post.

I recently tried this place based on many recommendations. I tried to order a sesame bagel with whitefish salad. It took several repetitions of my order and three people behind the counter to translate. I also order a second bagel to take home.

The bagel was better than most of the choices in the North Slope (from my experience). It did not come anywhere close to the bagels on the other side of Brooklyn (i.e. Coney Island Ave & Ave U). I doubt that I will return.

The Bagel Factory sounds very interesting. I may check it out tomorrow.

    Thanks.

Are you talking about Coney Island Bagels and Bialys? I absolutely love the bialys there, but have never been that impressed with their bagels.
  • this is how i feel about Prospect Perk, only about their coffee, cleanliness, and service. not so much about their bagels

Their bagels are actually from Bagel Hole.

Are the workers truly from Mexico or do they just speak Spanish, have brown skin and stout bodies that stand around five feetl? Enquiring minds want to know if we're slapping "Mexican" on to Ecuadorians.

I haven't been over there in a while. Perhaps I am confusing the Bagel place with the Bialys place. I think that the bagels place a little further down at Brooklyn Bagel Boys (2829 Coney Island Ave).

BTW, I used to go to the NY Sports Club over the H&H bagels on the Upper West Side. Occasionally afterwards, I would stop in to order the 'hottest' bagel in the store. The person behind the counter would pull one that just came out of the oven. It would be a challenge to consume without burning my fingers.

    Thanks.

Clear communication with customers is a must for business success. If there's a language barrier, maybe the alleged Bagel Hell can post a chart with images and numbers like McDonald’s Value Meal poster. You got to know what your customer wants if you want their money.

I can relate to being frustrated by broken communication. Last night at a restaurant outside of Brooklyn, I asked a waiter who spoke little English to refill my coffee cup, but he misunderstood me, grabbed my cup and vanished for the amount of time it took me to get angry and decide to demand the check before more confusion happened. What's the solution to this phenomena? Should everyone learn English or do American public schools teach more languages starting in the first grade?

I'll have to give Brooklyn Bagel Boys a try.

I've got to disagree about H&H though. Although any bagel benefits from being fresh and hot, the basic H&H bagel has a fatal flaw: way too much sugar in the dough. In fact, it is my firm belief that the only reason H&H initially became so popular was its proximity to Zabar's, making it an easy stop while picking up lox/smoked salmon/whitefish salad/whatever.
  • I had a H&H garlic yesterday. Fucking ghastly. Way too much sucre like Carnivore states and it had the consistency of wet cardboard.
  • Subject: not that bad

I was just there yesterday for hot chocolate and bagels. The bagels were fantastic and the guy behind the counter spoke English. The bagel factory is better though.

I always thought that the sweetness of H&H bagels came from me over salivating. :-)

I visited The Bagel Factory today. I had a wonderful experience. The place was busy, but still comfortable. I ordered a toasted garlic bagel with lox spread. Although the bagel was a little burnt, it made a great sandwich. In addition, on the way out, I asked the gentleman behind the counter for a bagel just out of the oven. He smiled and returned with a pipping hot bagel that I could barely hold. It was sweet!!

In short, I found the Bagel Hole bagels to be on the dense side, while the The Bagel Factory bagels to be on the light side. Both are great bagels, but the Bagel Factory wins for overall experience. In any case, they are both wonderful destinations for folks that live in the North Slope.

    Thanks for the tips.
  • The Bagel Hole has gone a little downhill, but is still the best. Closely rivaled by Terrace Bagel.

I had to stop going to the Bagel Factory because I couldn't stand watching the guys go from register to food to register to food. They've got four guys working behind the counter and each one rings up the order he's made then takes the next customer, never washing his hands in between. If they would just have one of the workers stay on the register and the rest make the food, they would not have lost my business.

Many years working cash registers taught me that money is really, really dirty. I just couldn't stomach it anymore.
  • i pass Bagel Hole by all the time, walking to work. i see that they're celebrating some kind of anniversary now arent they. i would thin kthat that says something right there. in general tho, i have been surprised since moving to BK (carroll gardens but...) from NJ at the dearth of bagel places around.
also, a bit of a tangent but, i think the name 'bagel hole' is completely gross. sounds like a name for an anus.
  • This is the second time that goatse has been brought up when discussing bagel hole.

Such people are technically descendents of Mayans, who lived in the Yucatan, which is today part of Mexico.

In general, Mexico is a racially divided country, with the short, squat brown natives being at the bottom, and thus being the most likely to emmigrate.
