Mother throws newborn baby out window

Teen faces rap in fatal newborn toss

A 14-year-old Brooklyn girl who went to a hospital with stomach pains yesterday revealed that she had given birth hours earlier and tossed the baby from a third-floor window, a police source said.
Cops found the infant boy dead behind a home on Ralph Ave. in Weeksville and were awaiting autopsy results on the body.

"If the baby was born alive, it could be a homicide," a police source said. "But if he was stillborn, the girl could be charged with [illegally] disposing of the body."

The teen mother was being questioned at the 77th Precinct stationhouse.

A police source said the girl gave birth about 4:30 a.m. and tossed the baby in a backyard filled with weeds and debris. Hours later, she complained of abdominal pain, and her mother took her to Interfaith Medical Center. A doctor examined her and then started asking questions.

"Where's the baby?" the physician asked, according to the police source.

The crying teen told him, and cops were alerted. Police found the body where she said they would - behind her home just two doors down from a church.

"She should have sought help," said Lorna Bynoe, 66, a deacon at the nearby Nazareth Christian Fellowship Church. "We could have helped her or called child services. I'm sorry to hear about this. It's very sad."

Under the state's safe haven law, unwanted infants can legally be left at hospitals, police stations, churches or firehouses.

A neighbor who asked not to be named said the girl was afraid of her mother and had been hiding the pregnancy.

"I'm a mother of six," said another neighbor, Maria Baptiste. "It's painful to hear. She could have taken the baby anywhere. Anyone would be happy to have a baby."

  • Yes, we can all read the paper and watch the news.

What do you think would be an appropriate "punishment" and, more importanly, what do you think should be done to prevent such horrible events from happening again in the future?
  • the cold hard truth is that mothers have been killing their babies for as long as they've been having them. many different reasons, many different circumstances, to be sure, but it's happened throughout history nonetheless. there simply are no sure-fire ways to prevent it, IMHO.

she was fourteen, and she kept it hidden. how could she, a child, possibly know how to handle the situation without any help? i have pity for both mother and child. but i say "pity", not "amnesty".

    (sigh)
  • There needs to be much much more outreach to the schools regarding the Baby Safe Haven program which allows mothers to bring their unwanted babies to hospitals, churches and precincts - -no questions asked. These tragic events could be avoided.
  • Another tragedy courtesy of improper grammar: " Throw the baby from the window piece of candy" was sadly, once again, misinterpreted. The Bed Stuy 2007 Baby Toss season got underway early this year! Gotta go now-it's umbilical cord & afterbirth pickup day.

What in the heck does this mean? I hope I'm missing something...
  • An obvious crack about the people of Bedford Stuyvesant. Tryig to say they (we) throw babies out windows all the time. But doesn't have the guts to use his/her own username
  • I think that post was an attempt at humor, although I dont quite see even the slighest bit of comedy in this tragic event. The baby died from blunt trauma to the head, being left in the frigid cold to die only moments after entering the world. To make light of this situation is as equally appaling as the act itself.

Mase! Hadn't seen you post in a while -- welcome back!

Agreed that this was a stupid crack, but I don't think it was a regular poster afraid to sign on as his/her username -- I checked the IP and it wasn't one that's regularly used by anyone here. Might just be an open WiFi network or something.
