Stupid Dog Owners — Brooklynian

Stupid Dog Owners

Well not all dog owners are stupid. Just the ones that can't be bothered to pick up their dog's crap.

Does anyone have any good, non-confrontational way to get these people to be more responsible for their pet's poop?

It would be quite easy to say "Hey your dog just took a dump over there and what are you going to do about it?" but I don't think that will solve the problem.

I'm a little more forgiving when someone is out on the sidewalk and their dog takes an unexpected dump. but it really drives me crazy when it's down at Ft. Greene Park during the off-leash hours. The dog-owner has clearly brought their pet down there to take advantage of the off-leash hours but they can't be concerned enough to pick up after their pet.

I guess they view owning a pet in the city as more of a right then a privilege. To me it's the epitome of hypocrisy.

  • Oh, it kills me. Once we gave one irresponsible pitbull puppy owner a major staredown until he scrambled to find something in the nearby garbage that he could pick up the poop with. It's unbelievable to me why people don't have more respect for their neighbors & even their OWN surroundings -- sidewalks THEY have to walk on and look at every day, too.
  • I sometimes wonder what irresponsible dog owners' homes look like. Can't be pretty.
  • If you see a park official or a city cop nearby, just bring it to their attention. A ticket and a fine will do a world of good.
  • I'm a dog owner and agree completely. If I see it happening, I ask if they need a bag. There are also containers with doggy bags in Ft Greene Park! That seems to work.

If you have poop on the sidewalk in front of your home, it proliferates ....so as annoying as it may be to clean up after others, you are better off doing it in the long run.

But there are many jerk dog owners, I agree. They go hand in hand with the school kids that toss chicken bones on the sidewalk after school.
  • Once, this young man and his girlfriend were walking their dog in front of my old apartment on Dekalb & Waverly. As we passed each other, the man let his dog take a dump right at my gate. I said to him, "I know you're going to clean that up." He looked mildly surprised then replied, "but I don't have anything to pick it up with!" He then decided to take the plastic bag he held something in and use that.

    smile mildly
say "hi" like you're smpathetic to the problem of "OOPS no bag" and have total good faith that they *want* to be good citizens
and hand them a plastic bag

just keep a bag in your pocket -- they roll up super small
  • I admit it, I am a dog owner. However, I would NEVER leave my house with my dog and not have a poo-bag (or two) in my pocket for even the unexpected accidents. That said, I find myself getting angrier and angrier with both irresponsible dog owners (everyone knows how gross it is to step in dog poo) and to a certain extent, non-dog owners who assume that because you have a dog, you're going to let it go wherever, whenever it likes and as a result, lectures you as you're simply going about your responsible business. The latter is actually a minor irritation however, compared with people who let their untrained dogs off-leash during leash hours and then, still don't have the decency to pick up the poop because they're wandering off somewhere else. ARRRRGGGGG! That's what really makes me so mad!
  • Just yesterday, I was in the park (around 6:30) and a guy was walking hisdogs (both off-leash). I had no idea who the second dog belonged to since the guy and his one dog were way ahead of the other who was taking a crap. When he called for the errant dog, I called to him that his dog had gone to the bathroom and would he like me to wait where I was so he'd be able to find it to pick it up. He was very embarrassed and apologetic... until I mentioned that, oh, by the way, off-leash hours didn't start for another 2.5 hours. <sigh> Self-entitlement has crossed Flatbush from the Slope. I guess the next step is the stroller mafia.

that pretty well encapsulates the irritations from the responsible dog-owner point of view . . . I'm WAAAAY more aware of dog poo (and pissed at bad owners) now that I have a dog and have to deal with myself.

The off-leash wandering owner (ha) happens anytime in the park, except during off-leash hours there's more people to yell "whose dog is this?"
In Prospect Park the winter off-leash starts at 5pm - is that different in the other parks?
  • Ft. Greene Park only has the standard off-leash hours of 9:00 PM - 9:00 AM

I can see from people's responses that I'm going to have to work on my diplomacy. That could prove to be difficult for me. :o
  • On a related note, in the last month I have seen 2 dogs come strolling out of the park and into Dekalb traffic during off leash hours. Both of them wandered around for a while and then back into the park. I know you want to give your dog some freedom, but leaving it totally unattended is irresponsible and nuts.
  • We've seen that as well. It's scary.
  • South Oxford Street had a major problem with this last year. The block got organized and did a chalk campaign (next to the dog doo! pointing out to offenders that they are aware of what's going on). This stopped the problem, then they got uber laminated signs and tree-safe fasteners and posted the yellow signs all down the street. This has been effective, and the signs are still up.
  • I remember seeing the laminated signs last year. The chalk is an awesome idea! Maybe I'll start it on my block.
  • I am a dog owner and a very responsible one at that. It's not too difficult, really. I pick up after my dogs and deposit theur waste in a city recepticle (not someone's private trash, which I understand is offensive to many). I don't let my dogs urinate on people's stoops- I always walk them on the curb side.
With that said, I am dismayed at the
    A) lack of public trash cans on the corners in CLinton Hill. I mentioned it at my block association meeting and was told that the neighbors had them taken away because of rats(!)
    B) Attitude from people who clearly just dislike dogs and assume that I am personally responsible for the piles of excrement left at every turn.
    C) Yeah, what's up with the littering, kids? Come to Clinton Hill, where the streets are paved with chicken bones and broken glass!

They need to do this on Willoughby between Vanderbilt and the park. I walk that way every morning going to work and have to walk looking at the ground or else I will step in stuff. I notice it has gotten worse in the past year. I wonder why the folks that live along there are not complaining.
  • who needs chalk when you have a phone camera ? :P
we could use the picture forum to post the shots of offenders (dogs and owners). Could call the thread Bad Dog! or similar.
I don't advocate using it to personally harrass offenders, not sure if you can forward info for police action tho...

Hey great idea! I will have my phone ready now. I think if the offenders knew their pics might be posted they may be more inclined to pick up the poop.
  • Step 1. Let the dog owner leave without picking up the poop.
Step 2. Pick up the poop with a brown paper bag.
Step 3. Place the paper bag on the dog owners stoop and set it on fire. Then ring the doorbell and laugh like hell when the guy comes out and finds a pile of flaming crap on his stoop.
