Subject: Valentine's Day Book Swap...CANCELLED

Don't stay home just because you haven't got a "Valentine".

There are many kinds of passion in this universe. Some have a passion for music or poetry or wine etc...

So let's get together and celebrate our passions - bring a book that you love or that has inspired you in some way and share it with someone else. You may inspire them as well!

(Disclaimer - this is not meant to be a "singles" event, it's for anyone who wants to stop by.)

Let's plan to meet at 8PM someplace centrally located.

Anyone have any suggestions???

  • sounds interesting. well if enough people go. i might if work schedule permits.
  • Hopefully, the books people bring will spark some interesting conversation.

So, I hope people will want to come.

I'm thinking it's probably best to meet at a bar since most restaurants have special V-Day prices etc...

    Maybe Union Hall?
  • Not a bad idea. Union Hall is a little stuffy, though. (Or did it occur to you beacuse of their bookshelves, gtrgrl?) I vote for Buttermilk, fwiw.
  • This is a really good idea. If you pick a place and go forward with it, I'm sure I or one of the other mods could make it a global announcemnent a couple days before.
  • Yeah- I was thinking Union Hall because of the bookshelves and also that it's centrally located so it's not biased to North or South Slope.

I'm not all that crazy about the place, but don't have such strong opinions of it either way.

What about "Bar" that's attached to Flatbush Farm? It's pretty cozy.

Don't know it--where is it, anyway?--but according to their website FF has a Valentine's Day situation going on so there might be spillover (if you want to take that into account). Otherwise...
  • I like Union Hall, but sometimes it gets very loud and crowded.

The last time I went there, three hammered white guys in baseball caps shouted at me and others playing bacci. They were harmless, but very loud. There were also babies in strollers, who are probably now deaf after being exposed to such noise.

I wish Union Hall had more than two bacci courts. The game is kind of fun, but you have to wait forever to play.
  • Okay - I haven't been to Sheep Station, but it sounds interesting. Everyone says they are friendly and have a good beer selection so...

Let's officially say that We'll meet at Sheep Station at 8PM on Valentine's Day with wonderful, inspiring books to share : )

    Peace.
  • sounds like a plan. hmm can i bring angry :p anti v day poems?

all depends on my work schedule if i can attend or not.
  • Absolutely! Bring whatever you feel like sharing!

    Hope to see you there.
  • that's a nice social! we should steal that idea for happy hour.....

care to start a thread in the Lounge on these Meaningful Books?
  • Hi, where is the Sheep Station?
  • Sheep Station is 149 4TH AVE@ Douglass
    mod edited for location

A little out-of-the way for me, but it's supposedly nice.
  • are comic books allowed?

excuse me. i meant graphic novels O:)
  • haha comic books :p. i wonder if mines in the basement are still soggy :P.
  • Drag 'em out of the basement and bring 'em - why not??? (Bonus points from me if you bring Spiderman books !!!)

This book swap is meant to be fun and lighthearted. The more varied the book selection, the better the conversation will be!

    To the Mods :

Thanks for posting the correct address!

Can we bring pepper spray for those who DO bring their valentines and get all smoochy? :)
  • Somehow, I don't think that's such a good idea... pepper spray just doesn't fit into the "lighthearted" spirit of the meet-up...

    Cheers!
  • I'm going to pass on the random book my friend and I swapped for Channukuh. Ecoterrorism baby! I'll gladly take a trade paperback in return,

wait, are you bringing something that was meaningful to you, or something you want to unload?
  • The hope is that people will bring something that has inspired them in some way or something that they just like and are willing to share/swap with someone else.

A little common sense goes a long way here folks. No one expects you to give away your most cherished copy of "Pride and Prejudice" that your great-grandmother gave you just days before she died of cancer, but please don't pawn off junk that means nothing to you either.

That being said - It doesn't have to be any particular kind of book. If you love comic books because they inspire you to draw or books about eco-terrorism because they've inspired you to become involved in environmental issues... then bring them!

    Be well!

  • So, is anyone actually planning to ATTEND this meet-up?

I'm happy to change the location to someplace a little more central, but would like to get an idea if anyone is actually going to show up.

Please post your RSVP if you're interested.

    Thanks!
  • throw me down as a maybe. depends on how my work thing goes. other wise i'm like 60% for it.
  • and for those who would like to swap books on other days, i found this site and think it's great www.bookmooch.com
  • Wow, that's a cool site...

    Thanks Chinaman...
  • Is this going to happen?
  • hey g girl where we meeting again. i'm now about 80% gonna go :p. but will be so tired tomorrow. so i wont talk as much as usual self. other wise i'm bring a book or two ;).

It's really only meaningful because it was a gift, I just like the idea of this random book continuing to circulate randomly.
