Stray dog around Dean between Grand and Classon?
Anyone see a large yellow/orange dog, longish fur, looks like something is wrong with his tail? I've seen the dog twice coming home on the B65, there was no way I could make it off the bus before he split. This is the first stray dog I've seen since moving here.
I don't know what to do, or if there's even anything I could do. I have my 2 dogs so there's no way I could take in another dog. The dog might not even be friendly, though he didn't seem to be wary of the people on the street. He was mostly ignoring them. I also don't know for certain if the dog is a stray.
Anyway, has anyone else see this dog or have any ideas? Thanks!

Most definitely a stray. Man, in this cold....poor thing.
I've rescued before in the area- people dump them in the park (prospect).
Best to call Animal Control. I realize they are a kill shelter, but better to have them safe and warm, with the chance of adoption, rather than suffer slowly from the elements. -
Would Animal Control come out even if the dog isn't contained? Each time I saw him he was trotting all over the place. I've looked for him every time I'm on the bus but haven't seen him in a few days. I'm entirely too soft when it comes to animals, it breaks my heart to think of this dog (or any animal) all alone in the cold. My 4 cats and 2 dogs were all rescues and I still don't like to think of what their lives were like before I got them.
I'll keep looking for him, I hope he's ok. Thanks for the advice! -
Yes, they will come out, I think. That's their job. Call 311.
If you keep seeing him/her in a certain area, that's a good sign, as well as a specific area you can give the Animal Control people.
Prayers for the strays!!! -
I saw him this morning at Bergen and Grand! It was right before the bus came, though, and I totally forgot about it until I saw this post. If I see him again I'll definitely call 311.
-
aww i will keep my eyes open... i'm on bergen & classon, haven't seen him yet. what kind of dog is he, do you know?
-
I don't have any idea what type of dog he is. He kind of looks like he has some yellow lab or golden retriever in him. That type of head and body shape. He has a heavy coat with somewhat long fur, yellowish/orange I think (both times it was dark so I couldn't get a good look). He might be around 60lbs, I'm terrible with guessing stuff like that.
I hope that if enough people keep an eye out for him that he'll get the help he needs. Thanks everybody! -
I am out of town or I would help. Please save him.. He must be freezing and starving... maybe carry some dog bones in a little baggie over the next few days or something

To the guest who posted some flamebait about how our concern over this dog must mean we don't care about homeless people (sparkling logic, that):
Your post has been removed. Trolling of that sort isn't tolerated here. Please read the rules for the site (available at the top of every page on the site at the big "READ THE RULES" link). -
Ok- I missed that post. If the guest is still trolling, hear this. How many programs do we have to get the homeless off the streets? They ALWAYS have SOMEWHERE to go. Animals do not have that option. I don't wanna hear that bullshit argument. This is why I hate people....
I feel (just slightly) better -

exactly. I was going to post that back at the guest poster, but waited until I was mad enough with my job to take it out on them. le sigh.

in any case, there are tons of shelters in this city folks can just walk into. and there are always at least a few places that will accept people who are inebriated and/or high (generally low cost rehab facilities or hospitals). animals don't have that option. they can't look at a sign or hear some word of mouth. they don't get long interventions by homeless assistance groups. domesticated animals are the fault and at the mercy of human beings. it's our job to take care of them, look out for them, and make sure they're OK. period. -
Exactly! We domesticated them so we are responsible for their welfare. They are more helpless than children because people would never let a child wander the streets alone. People see feral cats and assume that their house cat will be ok on the streets but there is a big difference. The ferals can survive, while a house cat rarely can. Sorry I'm sort of rambling, I'm not feeling well but I had to agree with you guys.

any news on the pooch?

I haven't seen him again, I hope he's found somewhere warm. I'm still keeping an eye out for him though.

Does anyone know what happened to the dog who got hit one morning in December on Franklin avenue? I called 911, and they told me I had to call animal control. I was on hold about 15 minutes, when the cops finally arrived.
While we're on the topic of dogs in the neighborhood, a few weeks ago (on that ridiculously warm saturday) I found a dog I believed to be a stray eating chicken bones from the garbage on Franklin and St. Mark's. I stayed outside with it, and called the police hoping they'd help me take her somewhere, since she was emaciated and scratching her fur. While sitting on the curb with her, a man who had been approaching from down the block sat down on a stoop and was yelling incoherently. When a neighbor left a house and I asked if he knew the dog, he said yeah he belongs to the neighbors who let him out to roam around. Turns out, the guy down the block whom I had assumed to be drunk or crazy, owned the dog and had been yelling at ME cause he saw me with his dog.
Best part about it was I was on the phone with my mother in PA while all this went down, so she was freaking out as she heard me talking to this man and sitting near this "dangerous" dog. When I called my roomate to see if she was nearby and could bring me some doggy friendly food to get her to stay with me til the cops arrived, my roommate told me I was crazy. Once the man who had been down the block, who was clearly quite angry started to come over, I left and I haven't seen the dog since. Boy, did I feel like a naive white girl butting her nose in where she probably shouldn't. -
I know that dog! I've seen her on Franklin when I was walking my dogs. She lives in a house on St. Mark's, they were leaving her outside but there's no gate and she was wandering around. She was interested in my dogs but looked very sad and dejected. She followed us a couple of times but eventually went back to her house. I haven't seen her since, maybe they are keeping her inside.
The house is disgusting, I thought it was abandoned until I saw a guy go inside. There is garbage all over the front yard and porch. It doesn't look like anyone gives a crap about it. They certainly don't give a crap about their dog, the poor thing has obviously had puppies at some point. It broke my heart to see how sad she looked. She reminds me of my parents dog when they first found him. He's a Cane Corso they found in Dumbo who was obviously used for fighting. He was full grown but only weighed 75lbs (he weighs 125 now). He seemed to have given up on life but is now a very happy boy.
I know what you mean about feeling like a naive white girl. There are many people around here who just have different attitudes about animals. They don't see them as companions really, more like tools. Someone needs to watch out for these animals. I took in and found homes for 2 cats that a woman up the street abandoned the day after Christmas. These cats would not have survived on the street, they were housecats.
I'm not a rescuer but I have 2 dogs and 4 cats and they were all rescues. Helping a few animals is better than helping none at all!

Dear Caseopele-
You think you're not a rescuer?!?! That's really cute- give yourself a big hug, because here it comes............... you are the DEFINITION of a rescuer!
High Five.
Oh, and about that dog- below is contact info for the animal police. If you think this dog is being maltreated in ANY way, they want to know about it.
You can do it anonymously, I believe.
ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4450
TIPS FOR REPORTING ANIMAL CRUELTY
Once you have found out which law enforcement agent you should speak to, it’s important to provide him or her with a concise, written, factual statement of what you observed, giving dates and approximate times whenever possible. If at all feasible, try to photograph the abusive situation and date your pictures. It would also be helpful to get short, factual written statements from other witnesses.
When you call to report animal cruelty, always make sure to keep a careful record of exactly whom you contact, the date of the contacts and the content and outcome of your discussion. Never give away a document without making a copy for your file! Make it clear to the agent that you are very interested in pursuing the case, and that you are willing to lend whatever assistance you can.

You couldn't have given me a nicer compliment! I just love animals, people have put them in the position they're in now and it's our responsibility to take care of them. I wasn't sure what the exact welfare laws were for NY, there are a few dogs that are in lots around here that don't seem to have any shelter. I contacted the ASPCA but I'm still waiting for a response. If they don't get back to me soon I'll try again. Thanks alot!

This is great info. And be aware that police officers must issue a ticket to or arrest anyone who violates anti-cruelty law. Many officers do not know this, and may try to claim that this is the responsibility of the ASPCA or Humane Law Enforcement. You can remind them that Article 26 of NY Agriculture and Markets Law states that neglect or abuse of any animal is punishable by prison, fines, or both. It goes on to say that police officers must summon or arrest anyone breaking this law. So if you witness abuse (and better yet, document it!), you can insist that action be taken (and impress everyone with your knowledge of the law).
