Fresh baked baguettes? — Brooklynian

Fresh baked baguettes?

jedhed

I am curious what people think are the better options for fresh loaves of French bread are in the slope area. I generally think that a bakery that does bread really will is rarer then one that does good pasteries.

Thanks!

  • I don't think anyone actually bakes baguette in PS.
But lots of places accept delivery of good bread from Royal Crown, Amy's, Bread Alone, etc.
Or am I missing someplace that really bakes bread here?

I cant think of anywhere closer than Court St. But the bread that the Key Food on 5th gets is really good. I love to go early on Sat or Sun and get it while its warm. There's always that end piece that seems to be missing by the time I get home
  • Colson and Grab have amazing baguettes. My brother in law is French and last weekend while he was visiting he couldn't believe how authentic the baguettes were from Colson.
  • The best place that I've found in NoSlo is D'Vine Taste on 7th Ave and Garfield. They've got a lot of great bread... I usually go for the baguette with onion or the ciabatta.
  • Best baguettes I've had - although out of PS, were at Fairway. They make them every hour or so during prime time and they're hot and crusty!
  • Blue Sky also sells a mean one but I think they get them from Amy's or Eli's.
  • Another vote for Colson - their almond croissants are pretty good as well and I like the shop (with nice pictures, no WiFi).

that's a good thing I think... the seating is too limited for someone to sit for hours on his or her lapotop.
  • Where is Colson?

9th ave and 6th street. next to barbes.
  • Fairway !!! YES BEST BREAD
this from a Russian - and in case you did not know it - we are supreme foodies!!!
HERMITAGE ( YES I ALSO LIKE WINE )
  • AND YOU ARE ALSO VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT!

    haha! :lol::lol: welcome!
  • I'd never been to Colson, but after seeing this thread I stopped by on my way home yesterday. Nice place, and the pastries seem a good size for the price. I only got cocoa and a couple of cookies, but I'll be back to try the baguettes.
  • i have not tried Colson, but for those of you who have... what do you recommend? i mean, besides bread. is there a particular pastry or cookie you think is outstanding? something that would make it worth a visit in this cold?
  • the financiers ... delish! You can buy them buy the piece, or they sell a bag at the counter $5 for 6 I think. You'll want to eat more than one...mmm
  • Oh, and their quiche lorraine is THE best anywhere.
  • Their sandwiches are excellent too.

    Colson - financiers - YES
They are small round thick cookies, with bottom layer fudge-y coin, top layer buttery goodness. Which totally confused me when I went to Joyce and the finacier was a small loaf (eau de gold bar, keeping with the money theme)
Any pastry expert care to 'splain this to me? Is it Belgium v France or something?
  • Subject: colson

I really like the amond/cherry scones.
My son likes their yogurt topped with
    granola and raisons and strawberries.
Their "morning rolls" are yummy too.

This is a deal - after 5PM their morning items are two for one - if
    there's anything left.

  • I wish I'd known about that 2-for-1 deal when I stopped by last night - there were scones and croissants left! Next time...

    on 9th STREET & 6th AVE
  • The Greenmarket at Grand Army..... But get there early!
  • Union Market on 6th Av, and Union has excellent baguettes. Made elsewhere but always fresh.
  • You must goto Grab (used to be Blue Ribbon...much better! :) )

7th Ave, corner of 15th St.

They have lots of fresh bread...and baguettes. Was just there Sat. and we grabbed a yummy loaf of rye.
  • There is a GOD out there - Monteleones and Cammarrari together on Court Street. Fantastic pastries and terrific breads!!
