The best/worst of food

Again, big ups to Melt. They altered their menu a bit which is nice. Great service, great food and portions. Very kid friendly and not too crowded.

Does anyone have the scoop on "Broadway's J-2nyc Pizza", its 1 of 2 restaurants that appear on zipmenu.com for my area.

zip menu is gone, gone, gone. has been for a while. it merged with delivery.com which, in my opinion, is lousy. -

Yeah, it was a major act of resurrection that brought this thread back to us... -
as long as it has been resurrected, though....
Best food in the hood: Sorrel. No competition, in my mind (though I admit I have not been to Garden Cafe yet.)
And on the subject of Beast: Went for the first time yesterday, for brunch. WRETCHED. Vaguely rude and fairly dumb service, eternal wait because they don't have the kitchen capacity to support their menu, and then over-sauced, mediocre food. YUCK.
(And it wasn't just me -- I thought a woman at another table might start crying when they tried (after an hour) to give her our food and she realized (after a 45 min wait) that it wasn't HER food, finally arrived. Oh, and that was the SECOND wrong table they brought our food to. Out of 4 seated tables in the room. The only table that wasn't offered our food was the one that was already eating.) -
Wow, that's too bad about Beast. I'd like to think maybe it was an off day, as the times I've had brunch there it was really good and the service was prompt -- LOVE the chorizo hash and eggs, and they serve Gorilla coffee which always scores points in my book. Wonder what's going on.

I had to do the waiting game as well for the brunch. But, the food was pretty good when it finally arrived after 30 minutes. The bartender was cool as well. They really do need to get their service act together.

I fully second Sorrel. Always amazing. I also like LeGamin, but feel like it is a waste of time to go there before 2 p.m. on weekends. I love Gen and Taro. Really dig Joy too. And, as ugly as their signage may be, I'm happy the cheesesteak place exists.
I'm bummed Kam Hong is closing this month. I dug their food a lot. -
First brunch at Cheryl's: very good results. Quite a crowd too.

Let me come clean first: I'm friends with the people who own/run Beast AND I'm the furthest thing from a foodie you can imagine.
OK. So, I've been there on several occasions for dinner and have enjoyed it every time. (Trying to make up for my culinary ignorance I've tried various dishes and avoided the burger.) Furthermore, I've gone with 2-4 other people at a time and the bill has been quite reasonable and the service prompt and courteous. Granted, being acquainted with the higher ups practically guarantees the latter. But it can't make the meal any tastier, which always I find it to be, regardless.
Now off to Bonnie's for that burger! -
Bonnie's RULZ for burgers.
I went to High Cheese Steaks House on Friday and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Despite specifying on the menu signage how to order, the server needed an explanation what "Wiz steak without" meant. And they still served me a steak with! The meat was dry and stringy, and there was only a hint of cheeze wiz on it.
I will go back, however, because it is convenient and if they ever get it right, it could be knockout.
Beast, on the other hand, I will never go back to. Perhaps because I am not acquainted with the owners, I seem to get small portions of overpriced and overcooked food when I'm there. -
How do you guys feel about Flatbush Farm, btw? I was there on a date Friday night--don't ask--and had no complaints about the food or service (or my date, for that matter) but as you can surmise from my above post, my opinion is not the most reliable in these matters since it's not the kind of restaurant where you are likely to find me.
-
I'm a notorious fan of Flatbush Farm brunch and am hoping to make it there for dinner next weekend or the week after.
"No complaints" = good or just meh? -

I'm gonna say it was good. It may have even been great. I just made the rookie mistake of going on a first date to that kind of place and--despite trying to conceal it as best I could--I was nervous and slightly uneasy throughout the meal. Which, in turn, has clouded my judgement somewhat.

I woulda though FF was a great place for a first date.
Then again, nearly all of my 'first dates' in New York happened in Freddys backroom. -
We end up at FF nearly every friday night. We usually go for drinks, but the snacking we've done has been really good - I got the onion rings for the first time a couple days ago - they were great. 8 bucks, but great.
-
have been to FF twice for dinner, and have really enjoyed it both times. their soups are really tasty, and their spaetzle with mushrooms is delectable. and as i've said on another thread, i love the fact that they've got pear cider. not only that, but it's pear cider on TAP. BOO-yah!! =P~
have to ask folks about Garden Cafe: what kinds of dishes do they have and what would you recommend? -
I had FF last night for the first time. got oysters - fuckin awesome.
also, my main dish whichwas gnocchi - my favorite pasta - was AWESOME.
and, we shared the pannacotta and it was also fantastic.
great overall, esp at that price point.
garden cafe. it's new american, for sure, but a lot of old school ingredients. I mean, I had a quinoa side on one of my dishes there. so good. -

karl likes the quinoa salad at miriams on fifth ave too, very upscale and fresh (its not that early 80s macrobiotic hippie food)
sorrel is worth the wait -

Unsure if I can wait til the weekend for pear cider...I might have to make a detour on my way home tonight or tomorrow.....Pear cider + onion rings.... -
just thought i would throw in my 2 cents
the little lady and i went to Gen on saint marks and washington for the first time friday night and i have to say i was thoroughly impressed. the decor was cool the service attentive and the food was excellent.
the crowd was also nice as well. ( no stroller brigade )
it is officially my new favorite sushi spot, i love the sushi at geido on flatbush but i just cant stand the disgusting decor. my feet literally stick to the rancid black carpet they have in there and there chairs are uncomfortable and rickety.
the next day was a different story we went to deacon blue for brunch saturday morning and all i can say is , ehhhhh
the place feels like your eating in someone's living room. its nice and clean and the service was friendly but it felt more like a coffee shop then a restaurant. my GF had the french toast and i had the waffles both were uninspired, the price was cheap and the place was relaxing but i wouldn't go back there anytime soon. -

I hear you. I had the chicken and waffles and, I must say, after having lived in harlem for years, I was NOT impressed with the offering at DB. but, I will give them another shot at some point. I actually really liked the relaxed atmosphere, though.

yeah, DB makes me a little sad. i really like the owners, and at first, i loved the food too. especially the fried chicken. but then there were several disappointing delivery orders in a row. maybe their chef changed?

Gen is so good.

are you kidding? chicken and waffles RULES. if done properly, that is. I hear there's a famous place in LA that does this, but I've only ever had it up in Harlem. at pan pan (which sadly burned down -- after I met DMX there) and sylvias (which kinda also sucked). but I am also a huge fan of savory food rather than sweet. I hate maple syrup. I like butter and salt. I like fried chicken. and if I can get nice, salty fried chicken with bread that I can slather in butter ... well, I'm a happy girl. -
I had chix and waffles along with some snout when I got lost driving in St. Louis. Very, very good.
-
The food at Gen is great, but I always have trouble getting delivery from them. It always takes an hour, and the last time, they forgot part of my order (but still charged me). I tried calling them to let them know, but by that point (about 30 minutes before closing), no-one was answering the phone. Since then, I've been boycotting, but I will probably give in soon, because it's clearly the best sushi in the area.
Oh, while their delivery is atrocious, the service at the restaurant is pretty good. So they've got that going for them, which is nice. -

evil, and if you like over-roasted beans with a lovely burnt flavor.
6. Heights Coffee. This is why I got to Starbucks. Starbucks is consistent. Heights is good, it's bad, it's middle of the road. I guess Starbucks is evil but they get it right every time.
