landmarked building want to repaint - do we need approval?

We're a small coop brownstone in a landmarked building in park Slope. The building has a painted facade and we'd like to repaint it the same color - do we need permission for that?

Thanks!

  • I would think you might contact CB6 (Community Board 6) about this...assuming that CB6 is your community board. I've been to a few meetings and they definitely cover that kind of stuff.

  • You will have to get permission from the landmarks commission. You will have to paint the building in a color that is appropriate for the building.
Here is the loophole, if the color was painted before the area was landmarked, you can repaint it the same color, and landmarks has to approve it. If the color was done after the building was landmarked, then you have to conform to their requirements. Hire an outside contractor that can file the proper paperwork.
I would recommend Malek Contracting. Thery are reliable and resonable in price. Plus he will file all appropriate paperwork.
  • Oh geez.. been there... done that! I own a Landmark building that is OUT of the Landmark area in the Slope.. We wanted to repaint the building a MORE authentic color that would be historically correct. We finally gave up and painted it the same color which had NO Historic correctness because of that nutty reg that allows painting the SAME color. In this case it had nothing to do with when the building was landmarked but simply that on visual inspection the requirement was to paint the same color. ..... but those landmark people don't have much of a memory from one inspection to the next.. so indeed the color was not changed from pink to red but close enuf!! Try and violate me now!!
