Portable washer and dryer--worth buying?
I'm thinking about buying a portable washer and dryer for my apartment. Are they worth the cost? Do they significantly drive up monthly electric bills? I'd imagine they do but I'd like to get a ballpark estimate. Have any suggestions as to what brand/model to buy?
Please share, I'd love some advice. Thanks!

I had a portable washer in my old apartment, the kind that hooks up to the sink. It was great and needed for baby clothes, but we still did a big load of regular clothes at the laundromat once a week or so, because the portable is so small. We used a rack to dry the clothes. I think there is no such thing as a portable dryer. The rack was actually not that bad, if you have room for it. The clothes dried fast because the washer spins the water out first.
As far as brands, I think the only game in town is Haier, you can get it on the Target website. -
There are portable dryers. There are two ways to do it. Either you can have it without the bucket to catch the water, but it takes FOREVER to dry anything, or you can hook it up to a pipe and bucket which is the better way.

Try getting a Malber wash/dry combo. We love ours...6+ years and going. Great for small spaces. Can do a sink hook-up or run lines directly into your plumbing.
While the dryer does take along time, it's a reverse evaporations system (uses water, less electric and $$) it's worth the wait instead of going to the laundromat

For renters...is the water usage on these going to make my water bill significantly larger? Or does the washer use a small amount of water, and so the landlord won't suspect anything?

Small amount of water, especially if you are not using the dryer all the time. We own now, but our landlord never said a peep when it was in our apt's bathroom.
