Need A New Boiler - Help

Sorry, never met a plumber I liked.

Call Statewide Oil & Heating here in PS. (718) 858-9000
They did good work for me about 18 months ago, installing a new Weil-McLean boiler for a 7-unit building. They did all the work, including the necessary permits with Buildings and the DEP, and the crucial follow-up inspecting and registering the boiler with the city. Financing was offered at what were then below-market rates.
Also check with KeySpan, your gas supplier. They have a referral program. -
A year ago my building got bids for a new boiler, although we haven't followed through yet. Gateway Plumbing seemed the most professional and had a good estimate. Vigilante had a slick presentation, but it seemed that they were charging for it. Martin Plumbing seemed OK.

I use Martin Plumbing & Heating. They have been my plumber for 20 years.

Marty has been servicing Park Slope for over 25 years. -
We've been very happy with John Hlad for years. We found him after a couple of bad experiences with Martin Plumbing, actually.

Subject: Gas Boiler Info
There was a lengthy discussion on a new gas boiler/conversion at the Brownstoner board last year. Below is a link to the string of responses which is chock-full of suggestions/resources. I pulled out one response because I recent went through a conversion/upgrade with gas/steam heat vis a vis Keyspan. Good Luck!

One interesting response:
Are you using Gas or oil? I am replacing the oil boiler in my Ditmas Park three family House in two weeks with a steam system Burnham Gas boiler and hot water tank (don't remember the brand). I am doing this through the Keyspan program using Adco Plumbing and heating. I made it through the winter, but the boiler which is about 40+ years old has to go! it heats the hot water and is on year round. Keyspan offered the boiler at $599 and the hot water heater for free. I already have high volume gas supply to the house, you may have to upgrade this as well if its a conversion. This will be a two day job, one to get the old equipment and oil tank out, one for the install. Post an email address and I can tell you how it went. -
Evertight Tank Co. 718 981-1818
But we have oil, so I don't know if that's the same service.
Evertight was rec'd on Brownstoner by "Master Plumber";
I liked them (and they charged significantly less than the place rec'd by my oil co.) -
I had horrible experiences with Martin plumbing, esp after they investigated my heating system and gave it a thumbs up. 2 days later the carbon monoxide detector was going crazy as my boiler malfunctioned. Thank god we were alerted. Keyspan then shut down my system until I installed a new boiler. And to top it off Martin tried to get paid for their work, After asking once, they thought better of it and went away.

I guess I'm lucky that Martin failed to show up for a scheduled appointment and didn't answer their phone all day, the last time I tried to use them! Then I called John Hlad and he did the same job for less $ than Martin was going to charge me.

Thanks to all. There is a lot of information here for me, and I will look into some of the companies listed.
Someone from Gateway came out Tuesday but has not yet prepared an estimate. I also had someone come out from A Real Good Plumber, and they provided an estimate of $16k or $19K for a new boiler, depending on what size we needed. Apparently we're on the cust of having the size of boiler that would require hiring and architect and filing papers with the city..
As for Martin P&H, I've had uneven service. They respond quickly now to my calls for service when I need a small repair. But there is a chronic problem I am experiencing that is seeming to take a longer time that I would like to fix.
A friend had recommended Hlad once, but I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone when I called. -

Consider these things since you have to replace it. If it isn't already done get a separate hot water system or better still individual on demand (tankless) units for each apt.
Go dual fuel gas/#2 oil. right now #2 is cheaper and if you use B20 (20% bio fuel) you an get a $0.20 per gallon tax credit.
