Is your cat lost? — Brooklynian

Is your cat lost?

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
There's a cat who has been camping out in the bushes in front of my building for the past two days. My doorman has tried to give him food and bring him inside but he bolted right out again. He's (or she, I don't know) scared and cold and needs to find his owners! I can't get a good look at him but if you see any flyers around looking for a cat can you direct them to this post? I called the owners of a lost cat on a flyer outside of Cheryl's (the names were Megan and Ryan, I think), but it wasn't their cat. If you see any others please let them know. The building is 44 Butler Place, corner of Butler and Sterling Place. I can't capture and keep this cat myself, but I'd sure like to try to reunite him with his owners.

thanks!

  • Sorry, forgot to write that this cat is black and white, more white with black markings I think. Not a kitten, but doesn't look too old either.
  • Unfortunately, in this neighborhood, about 9 times out of 10 when we find a stray cat it's not lost. It either has no owner, or if it once did it was "dumped" on the street.

Is the cat friendly (does it let you touch it)? If so, it should NOT be left outdoors in this arctic weather. Even if you cannot keep the cat long-term, can you foster it for a few days or weeks, until the owner can be found, or the cat can be placed in a shelter or home? Or can you find a willing neighbor?

If the cat doesn't let you touch it and runs away it's probably feral. If this is the case and the cat is not in any imminent danger, it's best to just try to ensure it has food and shelter, and that it eventually be neutered. The Neighborhood Cats website (http://www.neighborhoodcats.org) can give you more info on feral care.
  • You might want to check w/ the "Associated" bodega at Underhill & St. Johns. They have a black and white cat who used to terrorize mine by hanging out at our window.

  • The associated cat likes to terrorize my pit bull, too. Then again, most cats intimidate my pit bull, they beat her up in public all the time.

if you take it in...it will never leave.
  • I saw a flyer for a lost cat on Lincoln b/t Underhill & Washington for a cat that was white with black markings. I think the cat was from 291 Lincoln Pl. Is that the same one you saw at Cheryl's?
  • Hey guys,
Haven't checked this post for a few days, thanks for the replies. A woman downstairs took the cat in and brought him to the vet. The vet thought that he'd been out on the streets for a while :(. She's unable to keep the cat b/c the landlord says no pets so she's trying to find it a home. Unfortunately I could not take it in since I have a cat and two kids (one just a baby) and it would be too much for me to foster it right now.

SummerGirl-- I think that was the same cat as the Cheryl's flyer.
  • It's really nice that your neighbor took the kitty in. I took in 2 cats in December that a woman up the street abandoned and found them both homes. One through petfinder and the other through a sign at my job. If she wants any help finding a home for the cat let me know, I already have 2 dogs and 4 cats so I couldn't take him in. I'd be happy to help her though, I can put a sign up at my job.
  • Thanks for the kind offer to help. I spoke with her last night and it looks like another friend is going to take the cat in.
  • No problem, I'm just glad the kitty is ok. :)
