WOW!! What a snowstorm, huh?!?!! — Brooklynian

WOW!! What a snowstorm, huh?!?!!

This pretty funny....how many people actually stocked up with all their provisions (requisite milk) for this "storm"?

Comments

  • I'm so sad. I was really hoping for a big blizzard so I could skip work tomorrow. :( the weather is mean.
  • Why stock up when you have Chinese delivery? They'll deliver to you amidst the chaos and destruction of the Second Coming much less a pussy category 5 blizzard.
  • No stocking up here. We could eat ramen in the dark for a while if necessary.
  • o NO!
I have no milk, and half a butternut squash in the fridge
    what will we do!?
    :D

o yeeeeeeeaaaaaah - our electric lines are underground, and none of us are required to drive to the store. I love urban living!
  • some of us have to go to work! it's pelting giant ice balls out there and i am dreading leaving the house.

it looks fine from the back of my apartment but from the front? where the wind is howling and is in direct contact with the pelting ice that woke me up at 4 am? it's kind of frightening. (and i lived in VT for years, so i'm not wimpy about weather and i have more cold weather clothing than most people)
  • watch out at eastern parkway and washington, folks. one woman and I were hanging onto the fence there and another woman totally went down face first - she was BLOWN over by the wind. it's totally idiotic out there.

also, I had this really creepy dream about vampires and trolls and stuff that I was battling (and I was somehow harry potter with a sword - snape was helping out) and then I got locked into a bathroom because this crazed vampire kid was coming after me (and the kid was somehow snape's) and I woke up when the kid apparated into the bathroom behind me and whispered "I'm right behind you, [alafairnadia]". omfg! the ice hitting the windows had me convinced the vampire was in my house so I ran around turning on all the lights with a book as a weapon (not a harry potter book, or vampire book, or troll book) and I was really pleased that I know that my closet in my bedroom is such a disaster zone no vampire could hide in it, even if they turned into a bat or hung upsidedown. had to share, sorry.

Are you sure the woman you saw falling over wasn't ME, from a distance?! Because I just got home 15 minutes ago from an entirely abortive attempt to walk across Eastern Parkway from Underhill to Washington. I got knocked down twice in front of the museum and then gave up and went home!

    I underestimated you, storm.
  • it's a totally weird mix of sugar and rock salt flying around (OUCH!)
but it's only slick at the bare spots
    beware the bare spots . . .
  • and i have to go to f'ing williamsburg. on the G train. then walk to my studio which is far from the G and very close to the river.

no - she was coming off of washington to e.parkway. this was around 8:50 a.m. hope you're ok!
  • I helped some poor guy get unstuck... kinda. He was partially in the intersection on Vandy - I could only help him to get across the street and out of the intersection. He had a sporty, rear-wheel drive car, with a weight bias towards the front (non-driven) wheels and totally inappropriate tires for this weather...

And damn, that wind-driven sleet/ice stings!

    oh!
watch out for your dogs. this is the kind of weather that dogs risk electrocution
--keep them away from power poles

Yeah, I'm none the worse for wear--was wearing a big puffy coat that cushioned things a bit. I just couldn't believe that it actually happened. If only I'd seen your post before I left! But actually, it helped because I was considering trying again and walking around the other way, straight down Washington, and it sounds like that wouldn't have helped.

well, at least there's a fence that kinda wraps around the corner where you can hang on, but if you didn't manage to hang on, there's a potential for being impaled, so it's probably best to avoid e.pkwy right now.
I've heard flatbush is no better.

  • Now that's winter!
  • Thank god for sleet. Last night the forecast was calling for 32 degrees and heavy rain.
  • From the Colbert Report Monday night:

Wait for the "11 feet of snow" part.
  • Some poor guy in a suit and inappropriate shoes just bit it in front of Staples outside my office. :-(
  • god i just finish shoveling snow and it blows. cause my dad took all our snow shovels and forgot to bring them back from his work. i use a regular shovel a lot more work.

    hate snow.

saw sje. hehe i keep spoting her around town. this time she saw me :p and said hi. i usually see her and her bike but today she was on foot.
  • Hey armchair! I was on my way to shovel the front of my shop, and have lunch with a friend. I'm used to flying around on my bike and walking in that slush was slow going today! Hope this stuff melts soon... and not turns to ice.

It's good to know that someone rides the G train. I had been under the impression that it was just there to clog up the tracks and delay the F train, but this makes me feel better.

it's an odd train, and had no heat yesterday. brrrrrrr. but i hear that in 2008 they're planning on running it up through church ave then having it loop back, which means easier access to other parts of brooklyn without having to change trains at smith/9 in the cold. (hint: change trains at bergen or carroll, at least you won't be outside in the blizzard.)

Electrified Manhole Cover Blamed in Death of Dog
    By CHRISTOPHER FAHERTY

Authorities are investigating the mysterious death of a Boston terrier yesterday in Lower Manhattan. The terrier, named Bob, was killed after stepping on a snowy manhole cover on Rector Street while on a walk with a young female dog walker.

It is unclear exactly how the dog died, but police received a 911 call at 3:30 p.m. from someone who said the dog had been electrocuted.

At 3:40 p.m., an office manager working nearby, Pamela Barnwell, approached a sobbing young woman, who explained that the small dog she was walking began crying and bleeding from its feet after stepping on a manhole cover.

Ms. Barnwell said that the dog walker was inconsolable.

Bob was rushed to a local pet care shop, Petropolis, where the owner, Tazz Latifi, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

"I was just devastated, but hopeful that the dog could be revived," Ms. Latifi said.

After 20 minutes, Bob, still unresponsive, was taken to Battery Park Animal Hospital, Ms. Latifi said.

Bob's owners, who moved to the city two weeks ago, were distraught, the owner of Walkee Doggie Inc., the company hired to walk Bob, Seth Edelstein, said.

Yesterday evening, Con Edison workers were at the scene and had cordoned off portions of the sidewalk on Rector Street.

A spokesman for Con Edison, Chris Olert, said a work crew examined the surrounding area and found no stray voltage.

  • they never seem to find stray voltage if it's only the dog that dies.
