Esplain to me Lucy the alternate side parking ridiculousness

It's called ASS parking for a reason.

in all seriousness, did anyone die yesterday while chipping his/her car out of the ice? (took me over an hour, and i'm in good shape)... because i am convinced someone is going to die and sue the city, and they SHOULD because it was reprehensible.
-
i'll say one thing...
when i was out this morning, there were two completely stuck vehicles (one car, one van) on different streets. they were both half in half out of their respective spots. both were doing the spinny wheelie thing and just sliding around in their immediate area. and BOTH had damage to their own vehicles from banging into the parked cars in front of 'em. good sized dents in their sides. i offered the car driver my help in pushing until i saw that he'd pretty much jammed himself up against the bumper of the other car and was just slowly wrapping his side car door around the other car (!!!). i told him (tactfully) he would need a towtruck and left him.
i mention this cuz OP said it was harder to work yesterday than today, but it seems like today is all hard & crunchy ice whereas yesterday it seemed the snow was still pliable.
now, bearing in mind the fact that i don't own a car so i have no sense of car culture, i've got a question for car owners out there: at what point do you concede the fact that your car is stuck and that A) you leave it and take public transportation
you call in the professionals to lend a helping hand? again, i'm admitting to the fact that i'm utterly ignorant on the subject so the question is an honest one. -
As a car owner, I was amazed the city did not cancel ASS parking. The way I look at it though - if you didn't want to move your car, then you could have chosen not to. At the end of the day, the ticket is still a lot less than:
1. The damage to you or your property from tryng to move it; and
2. The cost of a garage.
The free parking the city provides on its streets is still a pretty good deal all things considered. -
When I called 311 last night they told me it was NOT suspended for today, Friday the 16th. Where did you hear it was suspended? i dug my car out and moved it last night so it would be legal for today!

Did anyone see this? The first is their editorial asking the Mayor to quash the tickets given to snowed in motorists; the second an article on the same situation.

Alternate side regulations were certainly in effect today, Friday. On the streets I traveled, it looked as if they hadn't even been plowed yet (Carroll & Garfield) Yesterday I was told that the cars that hadn't moved hadn't been ticketed but today I saw about 20 cars with tickets on.
With snowbanks taking up space and double parked cars, things were tight. I saw at least two cars get bumped by other cars. The mayor and DOT should be ashamed.
If you got a ticket today, fight it because I think you'll win. -
I spent a half hour digging my car out yesterday, not because I had somewhere to go, but because 11AM was approacing and I didn't want to get a ticket. I considered just saying screw it cause it might be worth $45 to not have to deal with it, but then decided it might be nice to have the parking spots plowed. Most of my block did move their cars, except maybe four or five. I drove aroudn for about 40 minutes looking for another spot and gave up and decided to be a jerk and double park on my block, even though I was getting pissed at all the people double parked while I was driving. I did clear out the street so cars had room to drive around me without having to drive over a pile of snow then spent the next few hours looking out the window to make sure there was not problem. So, finally around 1PM the plows came folowed by the sanitation car that usually gives out the tickets and I was glad my troubles had a purpose, but then they didnt give any tickets out, so what's the point of the car following around the plows? I don't get it. I was surprised it wasn't suspended and I feel like this is the worst job NYC has ever done cleaning up snow.

Check it out! Guess the pressure got to him.
Bloomberg Backtracks on Parking Tickets

It was a pretty bad clean-up job, but it was also a very weird storm. It was just a few inches of snow, but it was followed by freezing rain and very low temps, which created the hard crusty ice that made shoveling out the cars so hard. I don't work for the city and I am happy to bash it when it deserves it, but you can't really blame the city for the weather. They should have cancelled alt side of the street parking, and its too late for the poor folks that had to move their cars, but I'm glad they reversed their position.

Subject: FGX831CS you are a nitwit
No, dumbass, it was suspended today.
How to find out? Call 311 when you wake up.Slope4-35Yrs wrote: Alternate side regulations were certainly in effect today, Friday. I don't necessarily have a problem with the Mayor's idea, which was to have people move cars to ease the ability to plow and thereby making parking easier. However, THEY DIDN"T PLOW!!!! So everyone went through a lot of hassle for nothing. And don't get me started on the lack of trash pickup all week.
The concept of alternate side immediately after a storm doesn't bother me because I lived upstate in a small city for five years where there was no alternate side of the street parking but they did have snow emercency parking. When a snow emergency was declared all cars would have to be moved off the even numbered side of the street first then off the odd side. The city would come through and clean EVERY street in one day and then all the cars would move to the other side. The result was that two days after even a major snowstorm, street parking was available. Of course, that city is a lot smaller than NYC. -
Bloomberg is a F***ing greedy idiot. Standing there saying there wasn't much snow. I dug a little but have 4 wheel drive and got out pretty easily. My girl friend not so much. I was digging her out while my son and his 2 friends pushed her from behind all frantic to grab the last spot. So many cars didn't move that the street didn't get cleaned much. Come Friday I see they never showed up so I did all that work for nothing. You can't dig out while it's snowing since the plow guys dump it back in front of your car. They need a better plan. Maybe when they're finished with the transfat and walking while talking problems they'll work on it. Better yet maybe Spitzer can use his steamroller.

Dumbass? Aren't there rules about hostile name-calling on these boards?
At 7:30 am when I checked, Alternate side was still in effect. Obviously 85% of the car owners on my block believed this to be the case because they all went out and struggled to extricate their cars.
The earliest time I can find where it was said to be cancelled was around 10:30 am.
I am aware that in the south Slope there are different AS time regs. -

actually, there are rules. you'll find them at the top of the page, under "READ THE RULES". one of them is no name-calling. -
From wnbc.com a few minutes ago.
NEW YORK -- As more snow and ice approach the New York City area over the next couple of days, drivers will catch at least one break.
They will not have to move their vehicles to the other side of the street on Monday, according to an announcement Sunday from the city departments of transportation and sanitation.
Even though alternate side of the street parking has been suspended, parking meter requirements will remain in effect throughout the city Monday.
The city came under fire during last week’s snowstorm, when drivers were told to move their cars out of snow- and ice-filled parking places. Many drivers complained, and the city rescinded the requirement.
