Alchemy

I was wondering if anyone heard any advance news about Alchemy on 5th Avenue between Bergen and St. Mark's. The windows have been blocked for months and it seems construction has stopped. does anyone know if it will open and, if it does, what kind of place do you think it will be? It obviously is intended to be a bar.

  • the brains behind the operation didnt apply for their liqor license until after the construction finished. Liqor license application process takes around 6 months and can be denied.
  • I thought it was supposed to open in February, but maybe they're still awaiting the liquor license.
  • And, word has it that the owners of Black Sheep Bar on Bergen Street has purchased the space on the corner of Bergen and 5th Avenue. But he's not saying what he is going to do with it. Maybe Black Sheep will get larger. But that is hearsay on my part.
  • i seen people drinking in alchemy yesterday.

Yes, heard this too. It is true. I don't think it will be connected to the B Sheep, but be a separate establishment.

Walked by Alchemy Fri night. Peeked through the window and was impressed. Small, as expected, but a neat looking space.
  • i just passed by it
it looks all set up but the chairs were upside down on the tables and the lights were out
    the menu looks good tho'.

    :D

Is Alchemy owned by Black Sheep? How's it different?
(yeah, I'm too lazy to go look for myself. It's COLD OUT)
  • As per a DailyCandy NYC e-mail I received last week:

"It takes more than science to transmute a base into pure gold.

That’s the magic of Alchemy, Park Slope’s first gastropub — the kind of place you wish was around the corner from your apartment — where owner and former Lucky Striker Kevin Read has taken an old hardware shop and filled it with hardwood floors, booths, and communal tables.

Sit at the bar to keep the ’tender company (they’re still waiting for a liquor license). Snack on crispy chickpeas and admire the shelf of vintage cameras and chef Jared King’s (of Oceana and Peacock Alley) hearty menu.

Standouts include fried cuttlefish with chorizo mayo, braised pork cheeks wrapped in phyllo, hanger steak in red wine bearnaise, skate and chips, and roasted beet ravioli in goat cheese bechamel. Guinness toffee pudding needs no explanation.

As the name implies, there is plenty of good chemistry there."

Alchemy, 56 5th Avenue, at Bergen Street, Park Slope (718-636-4385).
  • just passed by it and it's open
it's a cozy space. bar to the left and a few tables for grub to the right
the menu is not the cheapest in the world. $23 for a fish entree
but i can't wait to try it...
  • Went for dinner last week. The food was amazing. not cheap though. go Red beet Ravioli!
  • Have they gotten their hootch license yet?
  • I had dinner there earlier. It's a pretty amazing place. In between all the oak and the old style light fixtures you would think you just came out of a HG Wells time machine. The food is really good. It's probably some of the best food in NY. The lamb stew and pork cheeks are to die for. I only wish they'd put out their croutons as bar snacks. And yes they do have their liquor license along with some actual liquor.
