Place to buy Buttons — Brooklynian

Place to buy Buttons

Hi, I am trying to find a place in the general Park Slope/BoCoCa/PH area to purchase individual buttons for some simple crochet projects I made. I discovered a great store on Union St (near the water), The Brooklyn General Store, that carries all kinds of notions, but I haven't had a chance to go there yet and it seems they only sell vintage buttons in sets.

Any other suggestions?

  • There are a few stores on Bridge St in downtown brooklyn that have general sewing supplies. The people that work there aren't very crafty and don't really know anything about the things that are sold in the stores they work in, but if you look around long enough you may find what you need.
  • I knit and crochet a lot and have a button collection. There usta be a great store in the Slope.. 5th avenue and like 15 street (across from Eagle Provisions.. perhaps someone remembers the name of the place) that was there for 75 years and was terrific. It went out of business about 5 years ago.. al least.. Since then I get all my buttons on ebay and there are loads... from vintage to modern. Since the size is clearly stated it is easy to buy the right size. The problem would be is you wanted a really exact shade The Fabric Alernative on 7th ave just closed... they had a nice selction of buttons..
Where Have all The Buttons Gone... I sing!!
  • Thanks Veets. I just noticed that the fabric store on 7th just closed. :(
Do you ever go to Stitch Therapy on Lincoln for yarns and such. I just started crocheting and have been to Knit-a-way (love it!), Purl and am meaning to check out The Yarn Tree in W'burg. But it's great that there is a little shop in PS. I tried to go on Saturday but it wasn't open yet.

The thing I really miss while living in the city is a main "craft store" that has everything you need under one roof. I love scouting out particular items at individual shops, but it would really help to have a safety place to go to get thread, fabrics, ribbon, beads, yarn, BUTTONS... Pearl Craft Center on Lispenard St. fulfills some of these needs, but other than that I can't think of a store that has it all.
  • Subject: sew hard...

The sewing and vacuum machine repair shop on 7th avenue down by 11th or 12th street says in the window that they have notions and thread, etc. I do not know what this entails but good to know...

where is purl? I don't knit but I do sew. The place on 5th ave and 15th street that closed sounds really great. too bad! and there was a sewing shop Sew Brooklyn that I think could have made it if they had changed a few things. they were at 7th ave and 3rd street. but maybe not. the real estate market only 'allows' for certain type businesses to sustain.... unfortunately, that ends diversity and sweeps of creativity.
  • Purl is a boutique yarn shop in SoHo.
This neighborhood seems to have a lot of creative types, it's a shame we have to run to other neighborhoods or Manhattan to find needed supplies.
I will check out that vacuum repair shop before I run all over looking for the perfect button.
  • Ah yes I think I almost remember the name of that defunct button store on 5th ave..Bergoff.. or something like that.. For the sake of nostalgia some one might recall the exact name.

There was a yarn store on 5th ave and 6th street..It has been out of business for 3 years or so.. no loss.. it was nothing special. The mark up on yarns is enormous but unless you sell in volume it is hard to make a profit. Holding classes brings in some money as well. Been there done that.. hard business and considering the rent in PS I can see why it would be hard to turn a profit.

You should really try Rag Shop in the mall at 60th Street and 13th Ave. Its a little further out but they are a one stop shop and they just expanded to take up most of the first floor.

While you are there 13th Avenue has numerous fabric and notion shops.

Also Bridge Street is good for some items.

Any favorite places that you reccommend on Bridge street?
  • It would be great if Brooklyn General on Union Street started carrying more than just knitting supplies. There clearly is a lot of demand in Brooklyn for sewing supplies that isn't being met.
