Hotels in Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a strange place. Probably 80% of all buildings are exactly the same as they were a century ago, despite the fact the Borough has three times as many people. Yes, it's true, Brooklyn is overcrowded.

What is even more appalling than the outrageous zoning regulations found in the Borough is the incredible lack of hotels. Seriously. There are many states with far smaller populations and 10 times as many hotel rooms per capita.

Why, oh why, can't some hotel developer get a variance in a borderline area to construct a decent high-density hotel? Wouldn't Brooklynites love to have a nice full service hotel, say on Eastern Parkway, across thes treet from the Brooklyn Museum? There are so many 4-story plain, brick faced apartment buildings there. Someone should knock them down and build a Hilton or something!

I am so tired of family having to stay miles away from my house because the Brooklyn Marriott is always full.

knocking down existing apartments is a horrible idea.
there is a new(er) holiday inn union st by 4th ave.
and I think there are a few hotels in the crown heights/fort greene area, just not chain places, but independant ones

another good option for visiting family is checking craigslist for short-term apartment sublets. we've done that for visits as short as a weekend.

will there be hotel space as part of AY? that seems like a better option (assuming it's going to be built anyway) than tearing down existing housing in a borough you describe as "over-crowded".

The last I heard Ratner was planning on putting up a hotel where Model's and PC Richard's are right now, which would definitely be an improvement. Seems like the AY plans change weekly, though, so who knows?

I don't think the hotels would make any money. Any upscale hotel in Brooklyn would charge just as much for a room as they would in Manhattan. Does the Marriott, Holiday Inn and the Comfort Inn on 4th Ave by the 80's do a brisk business? As far as Brooklyn being over crowded....since when? Check out neighborhoods like Bed-Sty, Brownsville, and E.NY and you shall see vacant buildings. Check out neighborhoods such as Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Prospects Heights and the like and you'll see high turn-over.
