Home-style cookin' with big portions/small bill?
Subject: Home-style cookin' with big portions/small bill?
Hello. I am looking for a local spot to take my husband for his birthday. He likes places with the following characteristics:1. Large portions (no beautifully arranged tid-bits of food that leave him to order chinese food when we get home!)
2. Mashed potatoes on the menu
3. Fairly-priced
Decor, trendiness, crowds don't mean a thing to him. Good food without the fanfare is what he likes. I'm trying to find the perfect spot in the Slope and surprise him. (It doesn't have to be in Park Slope, but it would be great to introduce him to a place that we can easily return to.)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Maybe Tavern on Dean? Or Bubby's in Dumbo? Not really local to you though.

Tavern on Dean has great mashed potatoes and good 'hearty' meals. Here is their website (incl menu): http://www.tavernondean.com/
-
Park Slope Ale House - the portions are large and they have great mashed potatoes. They Shepherd's Pie is huge!
-
El Gran Castillo on Flatbush has a great food, humongous portions and the prices cannot be beat. Hope your husband has a great birthday and let us know where you wind up going

Red Cafe. I think they have mashed potatoes.
-
one thing about tavern on dean and prices: they automatically charge a 17% gratuity (even for a party of 2). not saying you shouldn't go there, but i was not happy to be surprised by that on my check the first time i went.

Where is the "red cafe"".. is that corner on 6th ave and 12th street or thereabouts? -
Try Mitchell's. It's a Soul Food place on Vanderbilt Avenue between St. Marks and Bergen. You should there once yourself before taking your hubby. Lately, they tend to be old school with the sugar content in the meals. They're open Wednesday through Sunday. If Mitchell's isn't to your liking then I second El Gran Castillo....

Actually, just thinking about it you should go to Tomasso for Lent. It's on 86th Street between 14th & 15th Avenues in Dyker Heights. They do a fixed menu, and I believe mashed potatoes is on the menu. It's really good food, a great Maurice Vallencio Mafioso atmosphere and the price is right.
POSTSCRIPT AFTER THE FACT: Not being a good Cat-o-lik I didn't know Lent ended tonight. So tonight is the last night for Carnivale at Tomasso. I still recommend them for their regular menu. -

Its on 5th Ave between Prospect and St. Marks.
Its not "big portions" like family style chicken parm big portions, but it is non-pretentious, good quality food with friendly service.
**edited for a big typo - I've left the little ones** -
What about Biscuit? It's on 5th Ave. & President and is perfect for hearty portions of home style meals. Sooo goooood. Get the brisket. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

i wouldn't go to Biscuit for the hubby's B-Day celebration if you haven't been there before. there are two opposing views about the place, those that love it, those that don't. i fall into the latter category, whereas em, who posted just above, takes the former view. here's a thread you may wish to read: http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5835&highlight=biscuit
it's just one person's opinion over another, and who knows, you may love the place after trying it. but a lot of people around here don't, so i'm just saying it might not be the best place to go for a special dinner. -
What Ms. Glove Hat is trying to say in her own polite way is that Biscuit is a dump. The food is nothing more than a hipster chef's interpretation of what southern cooking should be. That you can get better bbq ribs and pulled pork from a generic labeled can in any "Everything for 99 Cents" store rather than spend the $$ at the 5th Avenue establishment. Now! Can we please put some more posts on the "Angry Rants on PS Kids" topic. We have the views just not the posts.

I know this isn't a popular choice here, but the restaurant side of 200 Fifth has great mashed potatoes. The bar crowd is usually not bad on a weeknight (although I wouldn't suggest eating there on a Friday or Saturday night). But the portions are large and the prices are okay. Its become one of our goto spots because everyone can find something on the menu that they like.

Thanks everyone for all of these recommendations. At least now we have plenty of options, even for a non-birthday night. By the way, my husband LOVES 200 5th, and I do, too. We go there often.

Update: Went to Tavern on Dean, but not for the bday meal (birthday is this week, so tomorrow night I'm taking him out) - the food was really good, and the place has a nice feel. We liked it a lot. He has no idea how I have been finding these places around the 'hood (Taro Sushi was the other place we tried, b/c of comments posted on this board) so it's been quite fun to surprise him and say "Oh, I know of a little place down this street... let's give it a try." I'm thinking of El Gran Castillo for tomorrow night's dinner... will let you all know how it turns out.

great! and i love these boards for the same reasons. people are so quick to pooh-pooh them, but i am always happy to get the skinny on a restaurant/bank/hospital/bar/supermarket/coffee shop/bakery that never even hit my radar before.
hope you and hubby have a dynamite time tomorrow! -

.....as long as he doesn't think you have a lover who is taking you to all of these places behind his back

That's great! Be sure to report back! -

Biscuit is disgusting. Avoid at all costs. -
I actually decided to give Biscuit another try yesterday. Oh, it was nothing short of a terrible idea. I wish there was a decent BBQ spot in north slope.

Went to Red Cafe for hubby's bday, because it was closer than El Gran Castillo. He loved his food (he got the risotto cake app and salmon entree, with mashed on the side, of course). I loved my app (portobello mushrooms over cheesy polenta) but was not thrilled by the encrusted chicken w/ mustard sauce. It was "too" something for me... couldn't quite figure out what it was that I didn't like. But, the good news was, my husband loved my meal, too, so finished it off for me (geez, I make him sound like a glutton... he's not even a heavy guy... just loves food!)
We shared a bottle of wine (very good value choices) and a crumbly apple dessert. The bill was just under $100 (a little more with tip). The place is cute and cozy, though there were space heaters taking up some of the floor space when we first walked in. The waiter was pleasant. I wish there were more menu options, to be honest, but all-in-all, a good place to try.
Thanks everybody who posted, for the great suggestions. Will be back next time I'm looking for someplace new to try!
