Police Activity on corner of Willoughby and Clinton Ave's — Brooklynian

Police Activity on corner of Willoughby and Clinton Ave's

Subject: Police Activity on corner of Willoughby and Clinton Ave's

Around 8:30PM on Tuesday (2/20) there were about 8 cop cars that converged on the corner of Willoughby and Clinton Ave's. They prevented cars from heading east on Willoughby, but not pedestrians or bikers.
Then a helicopter with a spotlight flew in a tight circle looking at the areas bounded by Willoughby/Washington/Lafayette/Clinton. Anyone reading this know what happened?

Just saw the same thing; no idea what the underlying incident was. We're pretty high up, and it looked as though the helicopter was spotlighting rooftops. Though we strained our eyes, we were unable to locate any suspicious characters.
  • We saw it too. No idea what it was. I certainly didnt hear any shots fired, so was surprised to see such a heavy police response.

I saw quite a few people standing around watching. It always mystifies me why people on the street want to stop and stare in those situations. Personally, when I see a heavy police presence, it tells me to get out of there asap and let them do their job. Why would I want to be there if shots start firing? Sometimes you can be too nosey.
  • Guess you're right. I was one of those curious who walked out of my building to check out the hubbub. Not often a helicopter circles my roof with spotlights... Cops walking toward Willoughby told me to get inside for my safety. Booked it inside after that. No idea what it was about but yikes...
  • Wow, now I really want to know.
  • Gothamist newsmap lists it as a "foot pursuit" but doesn't have any more details.
  • Cops even jumped our backyard fence to search around for quite a while.

My guess is that if they caught the guy ( and I suppose I'm assuming it's a dude) the cops would be more forthcoming with details. Or not. My neighbor called the precinct today and the desk sergent would only say they'd been looking for someone and would neither confirm nor deny that they'd nabbed him. He did say that we were safe now.

Seems like it would have to be considerably more than a mugging, no?
  • Maybe the perp stole a laptop with free wifi and he'll post the details here.
  • I found some details:

    Fight and flight

The would-be thief who threw a woman to the ground on Clinton Avenue on Feb. 20 narrowly escaped arrest by eluding police in a mad dash through the neighborhood.

The robber rushed the 34-year-old woman as she walked by St. Joseph’s College, near the corner of DeKalb Avenue, around 10:30 pm. He wrestled her to the pavement, insisting, “Shut up and give me your money.”

That’s when an 84th Precinct officer noticed what was going on. Seeing the cop, the thug released the victim and bolted empty-handed down an alley. The mugger dashed through the 90-year-old liberal arts college and onto DeKalb Avenue, with the police officer behind him.

But eventually, the attacker — who could run like a track star despite wearing brown work boots — lost the cop.
