Subject: Re: Mail delivery has been terrible as long as we've been he

What I've learned (I think from this thread) is that you have to cross out the bar codes on the envelope. Sometimes there is more than one bar code -- look on the back of the envelope too. If you don't cover those up, the piece of mail will keep coming back to you in an infinite loop.
I was in the 9th Street post office last week and the guy ahead of me was complaining that he had received his W-2 form in an envelope that had been ripped open -- and his address and social security number had been torn off the form! And he lived in a private house where no one else had access to the mail. -
It's pretty hit of miss for us, our regular mailman is great. Sometimes we have a substitute and all the mail for the building gets jumbled up. UPS can be unpredictable too, usually they ring the bell, but sometimes I've seen packages left out on the front stoop.

I'm really pissed at UPS right now. My sister bought me something from Amazon for a Christmas present and I never got it. She checked on it through Amazon and found out that it had been returned as undeliverable. I never got a note or anything saying they'd even tried to deliver it. She had Amazon resend it.
So I'm off work today and went out on an errand around 9:30 a.m. There was a note from UPS saying they'd tried to deliver the package yesterday. Except the note wasn't there when I got home from work yesterday. I called the number on the note, and an automated message said they'd tried to deliver at 2:12 p.m. yesterday, it was their final attempt, and I had to come to their warehouse out in the ass-end of Brownsville within 5 business days.
Around noon, trying to see if I had other options for redelivery, I looked up the tracking number on ups.com. There, it said they had tried to redeliver at 11:16 a.m. today. I was sitting on my living room sofa at 11:16 a.m. today and would have seen a UPS guy come to the door, or at least would have heard the knock or the doorbell. (Something else arrived by FedEx today, and I spotted the guy before he even got to the door.)
I called UPS back and got the same automated system, now listing the same 11:16 a.m. today delivery as the final attempt but this time giving me the option of rescheduling. WTF is up with these people? -
I've had several packages lately that have been "confirmed" by the post office as having been delivered. I, of course, have received none of them. When I contacted the Van Brunt station to file a complaint, I was told, "Oh well. Sorry about that." I'm getting everything delivered to my job now...this is ridiculous.
-
I'm resigned to the mail service these days. My New Yorkers arrive on Thursday when my friends in Manhattan get theirs on Monday. And I've had to extend my subscription three times since September when issues simply haven't arrived.
I'm afraid that if I complain at the Post Office, they'll just stop delivering the mail altogether. -

dammit, this just happened to me today! i've been waiting on a package that's been delayed a week already due to the storm (yeah, i know. a whole week? doesn't make any sense to me either). then i get word that it was delivered today at 10AM. oh yeah? to WHOM was it delivered cuz it sure as hell wasn't ME even though i've been home ALL DAY waiting for the damned delivery guy! WTF?!?!?   -
Don't think UPS are much better. I ordered a Sirius radio years ago that I never received because UPS couldn't find my office, one of the bigger skyscrapers on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. The radio was never sent back to Sirius either, it's probably still sitting in the UPS storage center in Bumblef@ck, NJ or wherever.
After much sweat and trouble I finally received my 2nd Sirius radio that I then activated. But because the first one was never sent back Sirius believe that I have two radios and every year they bill me twice for my annual subscription. I then have to go through the entire process of explaining to them again, that I will not pay for a subscription that has never been activated in the first place. It's an annual ritual around christmas time, I'm looking forward to it from November on... -
I completely agree with the comments about the 9th street PO; the level of chaos and unprofessionalism is ridiculous. Twice now I've interacted with an extremely rude young woman at the package window who has given me total attitude (complete with head toss/dirty look/rude response) when I've politely stated that I need to inquire about items (dvds; checks) that have not arrived at their intended destination. She acts like I've accused her of stealing them! Each time I've requested that she get her supervisor, and each time I've received an unsatisfactory answer from the supervisor. I can't *wait* to spend more time in those wonderful lines now that I'll probably be sending everything certified/delivery confirmation. As an added bonus, the mail carriers seem to have lost the key to our building and now buzz on a daily basis.

The last few times I've been to the 7th ave post office there's been a 30-45 min wait. I felt bad for the post woman who was manning the lone window. She said that she wasn't suppose to be at 7th ave, but was covering for someone and the postmaster has been cutting service for the branch, resulting in the slow service. She said to call the postmaster directly because he/she wasn't listening to the employees. 718.348.3000.

I live close to the PO on 9th Street.. Watch me I gave a good spit and hit the front windows!! Don't let me go on and on.. Not only is the service terrible but the mess in front of the building is outrageous.. I have called the sanitation dept many times. I love how they have a tv set up so when u wait on the endless line you are supposed to be distracted by the soap operas on the screen. The machine that is intended to quickly give you stamps never works. The place is filthy.

Nowadays they play a cheesy spot about their services, so you are forced to listen to Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle" (the USPS theme song).
Meanwhile, time keeps on slippin, slippin, slippin into the future and I still haven't gotten my bf's Valentine's Day card. Granted, the Royal Mail could be at fault since he posted it from the U.K., but I'd rather blame the post office here. -
I'm reminded of "40 Year Old Virgin" and Michael McDonald singing "Yah Mo Be There"

I was in there an Hour waiting in line. yeah its a mess inside too. The automated stamp machine right never does work. When i was there the machine that you can do it your self for packages, nobody to get the thing to open to drop in the packages, so they had to go to the teller and give it to them. They had 2 tellers helping people, 1 teller doing passports and another for pickups. Of course the line that was the longest one of the tellers had to go on break. I asked for postcard stamps, nope they didnt have any, then asked for customs forms and they only had a couple. What can we do to make that place faster and better?

Just make sure you bring them in as many strollers as possible and then let them push them around (stroller racing) through the aisles while touching everyone's food and screaming at the top of their lungs. For extra points, give them little beach shovels and pails and have them collect dog poop from the sidewalk as gifts for the other patrons. Breast feeding is optional, since that seems to please as many PSers as it pisses off.

If you're in a place with free WiFi, you can post an Angry Rant about people who post Angry Rants.

I would say I get at least three letters a week addressed to someone else at a completely different part of Park Slope.

It's the same for us, too. Our previous regular guy knew what he was doing, but has apparently retired. Delivery was awful for a while, but has more or less settled down -- but it still doesn't show up before 3 on weekdays. We still also get things put in the wrong box (4 of my co-op's 10 units have a Susan in them) and every now and then, we get something that shouldn't be in any of our boxes. -
Netflix sent me a movie early last week. It never got here. Today, Netflix emailed to let me know that they'd received the movie back (as if I'd returned it). So, at least the postal worker who stole my movie was courteous enough to drop it back in the mail after watching it. I think things are looking up!
-
Actually Rose,
What happened to you happened to us last week. What happens is...the shipping label (with your address) gets mangled in the automatic sorter, leaving just the return envelope addressed to netflix. (We got the outside part without a DVD and an email thanking us for sending back the Sopranos.)
