Dog friendly stores?
I always hate to see dogs tied up outside stores since I know the terrible things that can happen to them. Has there ever been a list made here of stores that allow dogs? If not, let me start.
Shawn's Wines - 141 7th Ave
Of course it's at the top of the list because I work there! And it always brightens my day to see some cute doggies, we even have treats. (Although, if the new cashier is there she won't give you such a warm reception. Look for the blue hair, the blue hair lets you know your pup will be properly adored!)
Community Bookstore - 143 7th Ave
Not only does Catherine bring her adorable dog Priscilla (or Priss) to work with her but she has Gomez the iguana and the latest arrival, Princess the cat. Princess is aptly named, she even has a throne (ok, it's a big round chair, but close).
And there ends my list because I am a terrible consumer. I basically spend all my money on food (for me and the animal fam), cigarettes, and books (oh and there's some of the other essentials thrown in too somewhere). Anyone else?

My dogs are so damn annoying that I gave up years ago trying to combine dog walking with errands. I will tie them up outside a store but only if I can see them the whole time.
-
My friend's boxer was snatched while she was in a coffee shop for three minutes, so I never ever ever tie a dog up on the street. Dog theft for fighting bait is no urban legend.
All the wine stores are dog friendly - my dog tries to pull me in Red White Bubbly for the treats they hand out.
She also had a standoff with a gilded pig at Matter . . . they are very nice about pets there, but I wouldn't bring anything with a sweeping tail, 'cause that stuff is e.x.p.e.n.s.i.v.e.
For the most part I don't mix dogs and shopping/errands though. -
pitu, was your friend's boxer stolen recently? A few weeks ago a customer was telling me about a boxer that got snatched off the street.
I didn't go into what can happen to dogs left unattended because I didn't want to be accused of trying to scare people. But dog theft happens alot more than people think and it doesn't even have to be for dog fighting. A few years ago my mom told me about a chef (I think) who would bring his dog to work and leave it tied up outside. Someone stole the dog and when they couldn't sell it left it to die on a rooftop.
Plus, theft isn't the only thing that can happen. A friend was on their stoop with their dog when another dog broke free of it's leash and attacked their dog. Even if your dog is the sweetest dog in the world, another dog may not be so nice. And if your dog is very friendly, they might not put up a fight if someone grabs them.
It's funny but I don't actually bring my dogs into stores because they turn into wriggling masses of wagging tails. -
I hate to see dogs tied up too. First of all they're miserable, and all they can do is stare at the store/restaurant waiting for their person to come out and this horrible interlude to end. Secondly I don't understand how people can tie their dogs outside if they can't see them the whole time (just as I don't understand how people can let their cats roam). Caseopele, I wouldn't worry about "scaring people," people need to be aware of what can happen.
When I see a guy go up to a tied-up dog and start talking to it I stop and hang around a bit. For a while I had this idea of making up stickers saying YOUR DOG COULD HAVE BEEN STOLEN that you could put on dogs' collars ... -
laura, that's a great idea! (anyway, it's hilarious)
let's sticker those dogs!
or get some art student to do it for us . . .
caseo, my friend's boxer was stolen a few years ago in manhattan

i bring captain john salty with me just about everywhere i go. if you don't let my dog in, i don't shop at your joint, or drink at your bar, etc.
the only time i will leave him outside is if i'm grabbing a bite to eat (real quick, 15 minutes) and i sit in the window, watching him the entire time.
and i rarely do that. -
4play on 7th ave/10th st is dog friendly, and Dove, the owner's dog, is there most days.
-
I thought you couldn't bring animals into restaurants or grocery stores? Or, maybe w/ restaurants, only for outside dining?
-
yea. any joint in the hood that is dog-averse is gonna be losing a good chunk o' dough

that's right. no grocery stores. but it's ok for restaurants if they have outdoor seating, like:
Lobo
Los Pollitos II
Black Pearl
Bar Toto
etc... -

I share these thoughts. Four years ago in the East Village, I was chatting with a friend in front of a store, where a golden retriever was tied to a post. As we talked, I saw a man untie the dog and walk away with it. I thought nothing about it until a woman ran out of the store and started screaming about her missing dog.
For the most part I don't mix dogs and shopping/errands though.
Some people are afraid of dogs. As a courtesy to other customers and store workers who have to clean up messes, it’s best to leave animals at home, unless you’re blind and need a dog for guidance. -
Well, I'm afraid of spiders but I still manage to remove them from my space without flipping out. I'm also terrified of heights but I don't let it stop me from going on the roof to watch fireworks.
I think if someone is afraid of something that they are going to encounter on a daily basis then it would be beneficial for them to find a way to deal with it. I know that may sound insensitive but there are alot of dogs in this neighborhood so it's not something you can always avoid. Obviously, if a dog is too hyper or not properly trained then they shouldn't be allowed in a store. But if a dog is well-behaved and friendly there's no reason for me not to allow them into the wine store.
laura, I actually got some stickers like that from an animal welfare organization. I tried finding their email but I couldn't. I'll try to figure out where the heck the stickers are so I can tell you where they came from. It basically says something like, "in the time it took to place this sticker I could have stolen your dog". -
Yeah, I think leaving your dog at home because "some people are afraid of dogs" is crazy. I'm sorry but too bad. I'm terrified of heights, crowds, etc. - I deal with it.
Wow, I'm glad those stickers actually exist! -

this is why during the warm months i usually only frequent restaurants with outdoor dining, and i use freshdirect. -

Yay! That's good to know. I wanted to check this place out, but usually the only chance I get to take a long walk on the weekend, I need to give the dogs some leash time. Now I have a destination other than Lowes :P

Wow, aren't you all selfish. Who cares if someone is allergic--your errands are just too important. They're f-ing dogs, for crying out loud. They don't need to be anywhere near people who are eating or just trying to shop without tripping over rambunctious animals.
It's your dog--you have to love it, I don't. -
I don't have a dog (and frankly don't like the way dogs smell) but I certainly don't mind them as long as they're well-behaved. Kinda like kids, which I also choose not to have but it's nice seeing them around. Rambunctious animals, like obnoxious kids, are another story.

Oh, no you didn't just compare dogs to kids [-X

Ding ding ding ding ding....Round 28

So dont...

BTW
Some people are allergic to peanuts - should they be banned at baseball games?
Some people are allergic to pollen or bees, should I not grow flowers on my balcony?
Some people are allergic to latex - should I not have ballons at my kids birthday party? -
Just the other day I was in the park and a dog ran over my blanket, licked me and then wagged its tail in my face. It did not hurt, but boy was it rude. The mommy dog just licked her butt and did nothing to stop it. She did not even say sorry - what a bitch! The next day, I was on the subway around 3:30 when a pack of teen age dogs came on just barking, wagging their tails, and dry humping each other. I was disgusted to be honest. Is there anything we can do about these out of control Park Slope dogs?
Seriously - with the exception of restaurants, I don't see any problem with dogs just about anywhere. Of course I am assuming that owners (or is it caretakers) have the good sense to leave the aggressive, non-house trained, or overly high strung dogs at home. -

Did you get a video? Have you learned NOTHING?! ;-) -
I can't actually recall any instances of being bothered by an overly rambunctious dog ... the thing that bugs me about dogs in public is that I'm always worrying about them! Besides the theft issue, I see people not paying attention to what their dog is eating off the street, or dogs on dangerously over-long leashes with, again, the owners being oblivious, talking away on their cell phone or something.
