Brooklyn's Premiere Thai Food Restaurant
Subject: Brooklyn's Premiere Thai Food Restaurant
Long Tan -- "Brooklyn's Premiere Thai Food Restaurant at 196 Fifth Avenue (between Union & Berkley)" -- did not knock my socks off. The staff was polite and helpful, but the food was bland, a bit oily, and slightly more expensive than other local Asian Fusion/Thai offerings. Long Tan's food would improve with more spice, herbs and fresh vegetables and less coconut milk, mayonnaise, and deep-frying.Long Tan's food was not the ultimate suck, but given that we have more Thai restaurants than pharmacies within a three block radius in this town, we can be picky about where we eat Thai food.

My experiences have been the exact opposite. I've been going to Long Tan for more years than I can remember and I think they are great. I would almost say some of the best I've had. Even their take-out equals the quality of dining there. But you have my curiosity peeked. I love Thai food. What do you recommend in the area?

Gosh, I remember when there was only one Thai restaurant in Park Slope. i remember getting illegally locked into the restaurant one Mothers day when they were understaffed and couldn't feed the customers OR get them a bill in a timely manner....but that's another story!
I've never tried Long Tan, but Rice Thai Kitchen is very good, and it's authentic Thai food! -
filmlover, you have a strong beginning for a film treatment there! especially with the mothers locked up with their adult children....ha, thx for that one
IMHO Long Tan was great when it opened, then went steeply downhill when the chef left, then came back again (I think he came back, but don't quote me on that)
I like some of the stuff there, not everything. And I haven't tried everything since it's barely on my radar anymore.
The bento box is perfect for me -- nice mix, some mediocre, some spot on like the beef salad. And they serve late, have a pleasant room, etc.
The jungle curry is v.tasty if you like spice.
I was bummed about their pad thai, so haven't had the heart to try it again...ditto the "thai bolognese" dish that is massive comfort food.
Plus they make good cocktails with fresh herbs, and fried calamari. I have a friend who is crazy about their steak bar special, but it tastes like banquet roast beef to me...eau de steak sauce that I don't like. -
i'm still favoring watana, though it's definitely better in person.
-
I love Long Tan both the food and the atmosphere.
I usually order the same shit though: the sausages or the calamari and then the pork chop and either the thai bolognese or a curry. -
I have never had anything that was better than mediocre at Long Tan, but I have to admit that most of the other local Thai is also lacking. Most of the local fare is just too sweet and gloppy.
I need to make a Sripraphai run sometime soon. -
Sripraphai is a whole different standard - microlocally you have to look for something pleasant to eat, not mind-blowing or authentic.
Anybody have a car and want to take us all there for a special HH?
I love Long Tan most for the pretty room. -

In the area I recommend the Q train, which can take you from 7th Avenue to Canal Street where you can walk South/East to Pongsri Thai Restaurant at 106 Bayard Street.
Reviews like yours is exactly why I went to Long Tan. Many have told me that Long Tan is the best. Perhaps so many stellar reviews gave me unrealistic expectations. What's the best entree and appetizer to order at Long Tan? -

food is subjective, silly!
try the jungle curry, when you don't want to get on the train
(but don't tell me it's too hot for you later) -
In the past I've been very pleased with take-out from Watana. Tonight was a disappointing experience -- they gave me the wrong salad, and when I called about it, they just asked if it would "be okay for tonight... maybe next time..." The sauces were congealed to the point of seeming not fresh; one of them was too gross looking to try. It's unfortunate, but I won't be going back.

I stopped going to Lemongrass Grill because when I ordered take-out and received the wrong food, the Lemongrass Grill staff rudely refused to send me the item that I had actually ordered. After getting harassed and feeling robbed by mean workers, I was stuck with a crappy dinner.
I've also received the wrong take-out food from Mango, but Mango's staff is polite and sends the correct food within an hour. So I continue to order from Mango. -

Why am I such an idiot? My first instinct was to get the Jungle Curry, but of course I ordered just about everything but that, including some crab rolls that I pray contained real crab and not "crab stick." -
Yes, getting stuck with a crappy dinner stinks! I must remember to try Mango at some point.

Ha ha ha ha! Is that authentic? Um...I think I'll pass.

the "bolognese"?
fusion, by way of australia!
saucy ground beef and thai basil over broad rice noodles - it was pretty delicious in a midwestern hot dish meets delicious thai basil way
I personally haven't had the inclination to try it again since the chef supposedly came back and the food got better.Innocent X wrote:

i love love LOVE Beet.
you can't beat beet! -
I'm a big fan of Song. It's a cool-looking room and the food is deeeelish, plus fair prices. Service was a-OK too.
-
Thai Sky on 5th Avenue is very good.
-
I do take out from Song on 5th b/t 2nd and 3rd (or is it 1st and 2nd) all the time. One of my favorites. Getting them to deliver any day on the weekend though - forget it. Just go, order, have a drink and take it out. It is very loud there, so be prepared.

SEA in williamsburg was the absolute worst thai meal i have ever had.
one of the courses was a chicken dish, and when it was served, the chicken was about 75% raw still. somebody, everybody fell asleep at the wheel in the kitchen.
nice decor, but i'll never be back. -

That is disgusting. How could you even mention the decor when they served you raw chicken. That is disgusting.

In my experience, there are two kinds of Thai food in this city. The kind that you might eat in a place like (oh, I don't know) Thailand? Then there is the other stuff that most Americans seem to go for....
Hey....the lemongrass. I think that was the place where they locked us in! -
most of the Thai food here is more like you'd eat in a place like (oh, I don't know) Iceland
not to say it doesn't taste nice

Not Sripraphai!!!
-
DO NOT eat at Beet. Near-fatal food poisoning, and I know several people who have had horrible experiences there, feeling sick and awful after eating their disgusting, sub-par food.
BOYCOTT!! -
My opinion Thai Sky is really a bad food experience.. I am suprised they are still in business. Avoid!!
-
Tried most of them. Watanna is still the best im my opinion. Hands down.
-
What's wrong with Thai Sky? I get lunch there often, and it's always good.
