Obama in the race!

Oh, that's a given. Still, I'm hoping her couple weeks here in the state before she ditched us might still lead her to be a little more sympathetic to our needs and to the fact that NY perennially gives far more $ to Washington than it gets back. As far as predictions go, I actually think she is the most likely candidate to win at this point--that being said, a lot can change over the coming months.

escap: what do you think about bloomberg's chances?
tell me you don't wurv his work O:) -
I'm a big Bloomberg fan. However, I don't believe that he'll run, and frankly would be a bit disappointed in him if he ran after all this time of saying he wouldn't. I also don't think he'd enjoy the office; it was hard enough for him to adjust to politics in City Hall. Washington would really drive him nuts!
-
I don't think Bloomie will run, although he'd be a good choice from a fiscal perspective.
I'd love to see NY represented so that we would have a strong advocate for getting a larger share of terrorism funds. It's infuriating to see how some states are wasting money on needless things just because it's been allocated to them for terrorism prevention.
I'm telling you - Rudy has ENEMIES! Lots and lots of enemies......Add in gay roommates, extra-marital affairs, connections to too many people who have been involved in shady financial transactions....on and on. He won't survive the scrutiny.
There is a lot more to the story of his divorce, his relationship with Judy and other situations. It will all come out. -
rudy is not even an option.
i mean. this is just the stuff we know about him
and the stuff still resting inside rudy's closet? fugggedaboudittt!!!!
i'm not excited about clinton. or obama.
right now. if i had to bet. it's looking like a McCain presidency... -

I used to like McCain. Whatever happened to the party of Goldwater?
-
This is precisely the kind of thing I was talking about when I posted my take on the race-baiting and/or dirty attacks Obama would endure if he became the Dems' candidate.

And this is early in the nominee stages...
(The second link is a cartoon.) -
you can only sustain momentum for a few months before the masses can see through the bright veneer and turn to the next saviour
obama is peaking too soon
anyone doubt that scooter libby is gonna get a pardon from bush?
why are we even wasting money on this sham? -
Obama Biden
Osama Bin Laden

Yeah, McCain is a huge disappointment. I had some hope for him, but haven't heard something out of his mouth that I agree with for a while.
Meanwhile, I'll be somewhat relieved if we get anyone but Edwards. He is your quintessential escap nightmare.
Only a 3rd Bush term would be worse than an Edwards presidency, IMO. -

After the 2000 Bush campaign used his adopted black daughter as a smear tactic in the South--the little-black-daughter-out-of-wedlock trick--and he later literally and figuratively embraced W, I lost my respect for McCain. But that's politics.

Sleep tight, escap: an Edwards presidency is NOT in the cards. (Although crazier things have happened...) -
my 2 cents:
rudy is great in an emergency (such as a snow emergency), awful during periods when normal give-and-take are needed.
mccain: i don't trust this guy's psychological make-up. he over-reacted to obama last year during the ethics reform discussion.
http://obama.senate.gov/letter/060206-
sen_obama_and_sen_mccain_exchange_letters_on_ethics_reform/index.html
i'd hate to think this guy has his finger on the nuclear button.
hillary: is polarizing but also disingenuous concerning her iraq war vote. trying to overcome her fear of unelectability by veering to the right is pathetic.
obama: was bush experienced? the unexperienced obama opposed the war on the basis of its stupidity. who made the right call? i believe the current 'war on terror' is over-hyped. the real problem is that the next president will have to extricate the US from bush's mess. is obama the one to do that? who would want to do that? in the end, he'd be swiftboated mercilessly by south-dominated republican party.
edwards: recycled message from 2004. but i do credit him for saying his iraq war vote was a mistake.
gore: gore and kerry were pathetic campaigners/candidates.
bloomberg: shows about as much respect for rights of speech and assembly as does bush.
it is a sad day in american politics when a "moderate" republican looks like a godsend. -
^^^^Agreed^^^^^^

I see McCain as the spirit-broken lap dog, he let himself be dragged through the mud by Bush's machine
Guiliani supports gay marriage and had a mistress- I don't see prude America accepting either; they will overlook DUI and drug use but not sex
Romney is aligning himself with the conservatives but will suffer from Mormonism being considered a cult by evangelical christians -
Good points, witch-king and Remi_CH. Although I do believe 2008 Gore is a MUCH better and improved potential candidate.
Btw, saw Newt Gingrich on NY1 last night. He had interesting, even-handed things to say 'bout Hillary, Obama, Edwards, and even Gore, who he thinks will be the Dems nominee if 'An Inconvenient Truth' wins an Oscar. (This rare instance of Newt playing nice was more than likely due to his being in NYC and also the sobering vulnerability of the GOP possibly losing the WH to any old Dem, as escap posted previously.) He also implied he was backing Giuliani. Which kinda answered my question, "What's Gingrich doing on a local NYC politics/news show?" -
I think the Evangelical vote is a tad over rated in GOP politics. I dare say that it's media hysteria. For the Evangelical vote to count in the GOP primaries Sen. Brownback would have to win, Then Brownback would have to win the Electoral. The 2000 Election was rigged and the 2004 Election was won out of fear. I remember quite a few people (NYC residents) voting for Bush because they thought he would protect the country better than Kerry, not because Jesus was on his side.. Plus, Kerry just ran a miserable campaign. He came out of the election looking like a jail house bitch. All Rudy has to do is come out looking like a moderate to get back moderate GOP votes for the primaries. He can support abortion and stand by his Iraq support as long as he doesn't waiver like Hillary seems to be doing. Losing the religious right vote may be the best thin that could happen for the GOP. Plus! Do not forget about Joe Lieberman. Here is a man that has been fucked every which way and sideways by the Dems, he's an observant Jew who supports Bush & Israel to the hilt and visa versa. A nod from Lieberman towards the GOP, no matter who the candidate is can heavily influence the election and get the religious right to vote.
If it comes down to Rudy vs Hillary, Rudy might just win. If it comes down to Rudy vs. Obama, I'm not so sure race would play a factor for Obama to win. -

You're right, Brownback's not going anywhere and yes, Rudy is the quasi-Goldwater candidate, as someone posted earlier. But I don't think he's practically invincible as you sort of imply. Far from it, actually. And anyway, I'd be very surprised if McCain isn't the GOP candidate.
If it comes down to Rudy vs Hillary, Rudy might just win. If it comes down to Rudy vs. Obama, I'm not so sure race would play a factor for Obama to win.
Lieberman has given as good as he got. He's also a self-centered, vindictive, blackmailing, opportunist who has yet to suffer the political consequences of his transgressions AND delusions about Iraq. (With Bush II having no political future history will take care of him.) -
I agree with you about their personalities, per say, McCain had his chance, remember too he came out looking like a pussy when he lamely attacked Bush & Co. when they questioned his patriotism. It still shows. And I'm not saying Rudy is invincible, not by a long shot. What I am saying is that he is steadfast in his resolve, no matter how silly some of it is and he can be very attractive to moderate GOP'ers and Dems alike. Like I say, Hillary is back pedaling, even Cindy Sheehan doesn't like her for her war vote. I'm not sure alot of NY'ers appreciate Hillary using NYS as a stepping sone especially since she didn't really do anything for us. And as much as I hope I'm wrong I don't believe the DNC will put Barak as a front-runner. The Dems, even though they made a sweep in the last elections need to run the presidential campaign very carefully. They have a bad habit of acting dopey and spineless. As for Lieberman's influence, a lot of people were saying the same things you are saying now before he was elected as an Independent.

i think i saw gingrich on a sunday morning program a while ago, during which he said he might run for president and if he did, he would join the race in september.

Actually, last night he said something along the lines of not running if Giuliani's platform was identical/very close to his, come Sept. -

Clinton had 70-something % approval ratings even after the Lewinsky debacle. And the main anger was that he embarrassed the country by doing it in office and getting caught, not that he messed around. Plus there was the perjury issue on top of all that. Most people won't give a rat's ass that Rudy had a mistress long b4 moving to Washington. As far as gay issues and abortion, Rudy's doing the right thing by supporting "constructionist" judges. That has been the rallying call of conservatives for years, and while it won't mollify the extreme right, I believe it will mollify moderates. Remember, the President doesn't write laws, so the only time in which these social issues become really relevant is during judge selection. Meanwhile, there are a lot of states along the east and west coasts whose Republicans are more socially liberal and would love a candidate like Rudy. -
As an update, Giuliani currently leads all candidates in the polls:
http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=1&aid=66972
Ha! And you said he couldn't win. Now, of course a lot can change my guess is that he WON'T win, but still you have to admit that he's a viable candidate in spite of everything. -
this is a looooooooong race and whoever is leading in the polls in february doesn't count for bupkus! go ask Dean what being the front-runner in february gets you come election day. bupkus! it gets you bupkus!
i see too much of the same things that felled the Deaniacs happening to Obama, for me to consider him a viable candidate down the stretch.
And, with Bubba as hillary's campaign manager -- and with her moving to the right at the politically astute time -- and with her overstuffed campaign coffers, my money's on her.
right now anyways.... -

I remember being out of the country from Nov. '91 to Feb '92 and asking my roommate when I came back who were the candidates making the most noise. When he responded that the Dem frontrunner was Bill Clinton, the Gov of Arkansas, my first reaction was "Who?" I hadn't even heard of the guy. And we all know how that turned out.
Plus, Bloomberg seemed like way more of a longshot to be elected Mayor than Rudy is for President. And again, we all know what happened. -
Obama is soooooooo gonna jump the shark.

so much of what i hear that is supposedly criticism of obama (and others, but he's the man of the hour) is essentially "he won't win" -- not he shouldn't win or he can't win but he won't.
we're supposed to be making choices here, not predicting the weather.
(oh, and for what its worth, i met obama when he was a state senator. when i saw his signs up for the US senate primary, i thought, "oh, how sweet. i love that guy. too bad he'll never get nominated." don't it show you never can tell.)
