Did Delicacies close?
Maybe I'm slow to the ball on this one, but has Delicacies closed up shop? I haven't seen them open for a few weeks but I figured the owner just had her mother in from France again or what not. But my roommate called Fermented Grapes and they told him that Delicacies closed up shop.
Any confirmation on this?
If so, what a bummer. That was my favorite addition to Vanderbilt.

but the short answer is no one knows. sounds like you know more than anything yet posted. -
Weird. Before opening this thread, I tried searching for "Delicacies" and just got some thread from 2005. Ah well. Chalk it up to being new to the board, I guess.
I do hope that Delicacies are on just some winter vacation. They really are super people. And I would also try to shop there whenever I needed anything in the family of what they carried (all my coffee, cheeses, and artisan breads). And being a cheese geek, I loved the fact that I had a shop with their quality of stuff around the corner. My only complaint is it was tough to match up my schedule with when they were open.
Someone in the other thread mentioned the hardware store on Washington Ave. Now THAT is a place that I've been to once and never again. When I first moved to the area, I wanted a board to saw down and use with bricks for a shoe rack. The guy tried charging me $60 for it!!!! (And wanted $5 to make two saw cuts. ) And... it was this beaten-up old thing that the clerk told me was left over from when they had done some remodeling. It had been a while since I had bought raw lumber, but I still knew I was getting jacked. $11.99 at Home Depot got me a bigger board that was new pine and they made my cuts for $0.25. I'm willing to pay a little extra to support the local shop owners, but when they try to screw you, I'll walk.
But back on Delicacies... just tried calling. Their number is disconnected. Kind of surprising, contrary to what people in the other thread were saying. Because the owner told me about a year ago that they were making it into the black after the initial losses associated with opening a new business. Will keep an eye out for more info. -

Too bad! I had hopes for them. It always seemed like they weren't fully stocked.

Looked in this morning. Some of the shelving had been taken down and there was raw wood sitting against the wall as if the space was going to be reconfigured.
Not good. -
wow, what a total bummer about delicacies.
mateo, if you search for mayday you'll find a lot of people have had terrible experiences there. you are not alone. -

I hear ya, Mateo. The guy who runs the shop is quite nice, but the older woman (she might be Polish or Russian??) is a rude b**ch who tries to up the price on everything by rounding up your total bill for their own convenience. She sucks. -

the people who work there take their direction from the owner who is both a perv and a charlatan. -

Wow! So is the owner the Russian lady? or the cigar-smoking man? -
They were all quite nice I thought. Expensive, but nice. but hey I've walked over to the Union Street market on 6th and Union and spent a lot more.
I'll miss them. Housebroken, too.
Walking by from G.A.P. this afternoon I noticed people inside doing demo. -
Yah. I meant to post earlier; saw this morning a contractor/carpenter doing some more work inside. So I popped in and asked him if the place had been sold. He said, yes, but the same type of place going in. But new owners. Which is a pity... they were both lovely.
So... Delicacies is definitely done. But some other shop of similar stock will open some time. -
I feel bad for the old owners. I hope the new place is able to make a better go of it. Hopefully they'll have enough start-up capital to open with a larger inventory than the old place.
-
I can't imagine that start-up capital was the real problem with the old owners. The husband still had a nice job and the wife retired from finance.

I spoke to one of th owner's earlier today. I was on my way to Soda for lunch and saw a West Indian lady hanging inside so I barged in (gracefully of course) and asked her what the deal is. She told me that they were going to be the same thing but with more variety and offer bagels and coffee for the morning as well. Wait and see I guess.
-
Looked inside this morning; there was a sign that said reopening March 19th (this coming Monday).
-
Sweet!
-
I heard donuts too. And maybe even eggs and stuff for breakfast.
