Good luck - most people in NYC give me strange looks when I tell them that my idea of camping doesn't include a cabin, refrigerators, or running water (besides streams, natch). Maybe a specialty retailer might be able to point you in the right direction?

I remember googling for this once and a couple of different hiking clubs came up, but I never followed up on it. As I recall, they seemed to mostly do day hikes. The only one I remember the name of is the Adirondack Mountain Club, but there were a couple others with Brooklyn chapters. WhiFi's idea is good -- you could ask in Tents and Trails, which is in Manhattan near City Hall, and I'm sure they could tell you who to call.

we just decided to join the Appalachian Mountain Club, which is a national organization with a strong NY/NJ branch. haven't done anything with them yet, but they do lots of cool-sounding trips, from day hikes to canoeing to skiing. they have several lodges in the mountains, and i think you can even borrow camping equipment from them. maybe they'll have what you are looking for.

Brian123,
My girlfriend and I plan camping/hiking trips in the warmer months with some of our friends. Mostly in upstate New York, but are trying to get things in other areas. We're always looking to meet people in Park Slope (we've only been here a year), so if you'd like more info, please PM me.

AMC is a great way to go. Also check out the bulletin board at EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports), there is one in Columbus Circle and one in SoHo. There are usually several postings for people wanting to organize hikes and trips. Additionally you could try posting a notice at the Park Slope Food Coop message board, I have a feeling you may find a number of people with similar interests. Good luck.

take a gander at: http://www.outdoorbound.com/
they're not exclusively backpack oriented, but they have some pretty interesting outdoor and indoor activities planned.
--like boxing + beer, how can you go wrong?
also meetup.com has a couple of backpack groups -
I've been on several hikes and backpacking trips with the Appalachian Mountain Club!
