Yoga in the Slope

Where's good for yoga apart from that place on Union Street and 7th? I found that place too stiflingly hot considering the class was supposed to be Hatha and not Bikram. Any other good places in the area? :D

  • Jaya, on 8th Ave & Windsor Place.

Sarah is wonderful, also Carla (the owner). Sarah's classes are more vinyasa, while Carla emphasizes alignment a bit more (but still basically teaches a flow class).

Also nearby is Yoga Center of Brooklyn at Smith & 9th:

Jonathan FitzGordon is a really good teacher; he's Anusara-affiliated but has also studied Iyengar and Ashtanga; he knows a lot about anatomy and can help if you have injuries.

though that NONE of the places in Park Slope have any morning classes that start before 9am. Who can make those classes when you have a fulltime job?

Does anyone know of any places in the Slope that have classes before 9?
  • I've never been there, but Bodhisattva on 9th Street has early classes on the schedule:

Otherwise you might be out of luck. I can't think of any other yoga studios in Park Slope. Oh - there is Yogasana on 5th Ave but they don't have early morning classes on the schedule.

I think the Slope Health & Fitness offers yoga classes in the morning. Also they have a whole new bunch of classes that they recently added. You should check it out.

The Bank place on Union and Fifth Ave has a good teacher, class is 7pm Tuesday nights. There *might* be another, I don't know . . .
  • I LOVE Jaya! Unfortunately I moved to the other side of the park, but still make it over when I can. It's a totally no-attitude studio... small, intimate, absolutely perfect. Um, except that it's not near me. :)
  • i go to Yogasana on 5th + Warren

    highly recommended.
although. full disclosure the owners are friends

Thanks, but I cannot stand the Iyengar style of yoga. I find it incredibly annoying.

Yogasana is a nice space though. I took one class there and then remembered how much I hate Iyengar. So there was no point going back...
  • I agree, Jaya is great!

I find there classes to be quite long though (1 h 35min), but you definitely get your money's worth ($14/class). Erica is my favorite instructor, but I'm not so sure she's there anymore.

I've always wondered about that place, but have never ventured in. Someone should go and report back.
  • I haven't been to Bodhisattva, but am quite familiar with the owner/lead teacher...Vivikan.

    Let's just say....um....no thanks
