Have you ever been mugged in Prospect Heights? — Brooklynian

Have you ever been mugged in Prospect Heights?

oiseau
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I have lived here for 10 years and have never been mugged. I always read the local crime reports in our local papers and it seems that most muggings happen in Park Slope. Just wondering, have you ever been accosted in PH?

  • I can't find it now, but daveb had a great post about getting mugged in Prospect Heights. Help? Anybody?
  • Is Dave's post on the blog rather than here?

  • I got mugged in PH back in 2000, in the lobby of my own building. 5:30 in the p.m., I naively let someone in the door behind me, since he'd pretended to ring one of the doorbells as though he knew someone there.

The cops later told me they thought it was the same guy that had committed a number of rapes in the area, so I felt lucky that I'd only lost my wallet.

Now that I know what a "push-in" is, I'm a lot more aware of my surroundings.

  • The crime stats are here, if anyone wants to do a comparative analysis. I can't, I'm math-challenged.
  • 14 years ago (fuck I'm old!) when I lived on Sterling between Underhill and Vanderbilt one roommate was mugged at gunpoint on Underhill and Sterling. My other roommate fought off a mugger right in front of our door, he tried to take her bag and she managed to win the tug of war. Then 8 years ago when I lived on Vanderbilt and Bergen a roommate was mugged on Bergen. I guess it's a lot safer now. I've never been mugged.
  • Subject: the fence

    dave,

are you the reason they cut the trees down in front of the wire fence? i am not trying to be a smart ass but i noticed those trees are suddenly gone and people can't hide there anymore... are you talking about the fence kind of by grand army plaze & st. john's... (this is the one i am remarking about) i always go out of my way to walk down sterling but my friend got mugged on sterling just before washington so who knows....

i do not feel threatened by st. john's.. but people always want to talk to me & call me names or say stuff like, "look, it's white out" or "i could use some cream in my coffee" or "give me $10"...

when i have tried to talk to people, they say stuff along the lines of.. they will smoke me up if i take them home with me.... i don't know, should i?

Isa's old school ProHo! 14 years ago, I was passing through the outskirts to go to the library and Wing Wagon though.
  • note: I am only 32 all this hard living just makes me feel old.
  • Two people were mugged outside my building last August by two men. There were no weapons involved.
  • Subject: mugging

And there was a mugging on my doorstep this summer on Sterling between Washington and Underhill (two men, sharp object, took wallet and cell phone).
  • Never, the only other two times in my life thugs have atttempted to mug me in the city they discussed and planned it in front of me in spanish, but I am fluent (and spanish) but probaly look more "cracker white". Adios Muchachos.
  • how do you avoid a "push-in"?

... in my building there is just one door to get inside, with a lock of course. but a lot of times there are guys standing outside, or, right at the door. and if i'm going in and they are directly behind me its kind of hard for me to not let them in, if their aim is trying to get in. this is why i hate the fact that they stand right in the god damn doorway and usually do not move a single inch if someone is trying to get in , or out.
