Red Cafe — Brooklynian

Red Cafe

So I just posted something about Red Cafe on chowhound but then I thought that this would be a better place.
I want to know what people think of Red Cafe especially those that have been in the last couple of months. I'm a regular so obviously I love the place. I'm not gonna go into a huge rave review but as I said on chowhound I can't understand why it's so overlooked compared to other places. I talk to chef/owner regularly and I think it would be a real shame if this place closes because it is so damn good.

  • I often walk past it but have never dined there. It's easily overlooked. I haven't heard anything about it - good or bad.
  • Where is the Red Cafe? I seem to remember seeing it somewhere (5th Ave) but can't recall.
  • It's between Warren and St. Marks on 5th ave. It's definitely tucked away
  • haven't been there yet either, but am curious. What's the food like?
  • Well, I've been there quite a bit and personally I like to think of it as classed up comfort food.
The portions are big and everything is just fresh, well prepared, great sides... I don't know I could go on and on about certain dishes. Right now I'm into the fish stew and the calamari is the best I've ever had.
Calamari is a pretty simple thing but at Red Cafe it's always perfectly cooked i.e. not chewy and it has a buttery - melt in your mouth - quality to it. Plus is comes with two dipping sauces, a spicey tomato one and a thicker mayo type deal.
Anyway just thinking about it is making me hungry. I'm no food reviewer but I know that I love it.
  • I am a big fan of Red Cafe too. The chef's signature dish is the pecan breaded chicken breast and it is always good. I've also had the meat loaf and the braised short ribs. Both were specials and excellent. My wife has tried a couple of the fish dishes and she has always raved about them. The waitstaff is very nice and the chef comes out and chats if things are slow. We think of it as a great, not too expensive, neighborhood option. I would highly recommend to anyone.
  • yeah the pecan chicken is a standby favorite for me. I get it with fries instead of mashed potatoes. The mustard sauce for the chicken is great for fries.
  • I had their pork burger a few years ago (some friends took me there for my bday) and I really enjoyed it. can't figure out why I haven't been back. clearly, must visit them again.
  • I went there for my birthday last year and really enjoyed it. The creme brulee was one of the best I've ever had.
  • The pork burger was my all time favorite. Unfortunately the menu has changed since you've been there. The lower priced sandwiches were taken off. As far as I know the owner thought he needed to make more on each check because business was so up and down. I still think it's worth it but I do miss the pork burger like a good friend.
  • no more pork burger?!!?!???!
