Cold Spring New York

Yes to all of the above. The central village is very compact, has the aforementioned shops and restaurants, and is within easy walking distance of the Metro North station.

The Main street is about 100 yards up a hill from the train station. There's a few antique shops, an Inn or B&B, a good dinner and a few other shops. Everything's centralized. There are some pretty old houses and churches further up, but the village turns residential pretty quickly.

Cold Spring is a great little village not far from where I grew up! Its funny to think of it as a getaway. Its right on the Hudson, at a nice bend so you get great views. From the riverside pier, you are directly across from Storm King Mountain, and a few miles upstream from West Point (western side) and makes for some great views. Everything noteworthy is within walking distance though parking can be quite troublesome for non-residents. An excellent day-trip if you are traveling by train. One noteworthy pub, a few nice restaurants (never tried them, as they don't cater to vegetarians), and lots of little shops. Most places close around dusk, starting around 4pm. If you do drive, Cold Spring Police love the lowered speed limits, so observe them closely as there are a couple stretches coming in to town that dip from 30 to 25mph suddenly and you will get a ticket for driving 26 in a 25.

Thanks for all of your help everyone.

If the weather's cooperating, Cold Spring is an excellent hiking base. There are loads of trails in the hills (mountains?) just behind town. My favorite is Bull Hill. The trailhead is just a 10 min walk from the train station.

I, too, am now interested in Cold Spring. Couple of quick questions...what is it like in the off-season? I'm looking at next weekend. Would this be a bad time?
Also, any first-hand recommendations for a place to stay?
Thanks! -

It might be best to wait until Spring to avoid the Cold part of this town. -
I proposed to my wife in Cold Spring. We stayed at the Hudson House Inn although I think it may have been called something different then. It really could not have been better in any way. It was a perfect night. We ate at the restaurant and stayed in a room with a balcony with breathtaking views of the river. It looked like you could jump off the balcony into the water. The next day we drove over to West Point and got the tour there. It was really great and I highly recomend it! Going back and looking at the website makes me want to go back there. I think we will when it gets warmer.

One of my favorite places in Cold Spring is the Plum Bush Inn, a victiorian house with an elegant dining room and excellent new American cuisine. Its been a few years since I've been there, but if I were in Cold Springs, I would definitely check it out.

I first visited Cold Spring when my daughter was a counselor at Surprise Lake Camp located close by. It was a lovely way to spend an hour or so walking around and eating at one of the pretty restaurants. If you are into flea markets there was a great one not too far away from the town that was held on Sunday mornings.

I stayed at the Hudson House Inn years ago. Very nice, as I recall. Check tripadvisor.com -- there seem to be three inns/B&Bs in the area and all have mixed reviews.

I would also highly recommend going in the summer (I was born and raised in Putnam County as well). There is a place called Boscobel, which is nice to see, and has Shakespeare productions during the summer.
