Is it just me or is there a lot of junk on this list? — Brooklynian

Is it just me or is there a lot of junk on this list?

Wow. I think you could easily swap out half of this list, maybe two thirds with a little thought.

  • Man, I started to list the albums that I thought were shite but then I realized that there is just so much crap on that list that it would take too long. Bu then again this list was made by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers, so I guess they really only care about total sales.
  • There's stuff on there I don't care for but will grudgingly give it its due.

But the Grease soundtrack? Linkin Park? Matchbox 20? Shakira?
Also, very little hip-hop: no Run-DMC, Tribe Called Quest, NWA, Snoop...
I thought it was a list of essential albums.

Wack, as the kids used to say.

Hell, what about Ramones, Zen Arcade, and Paul's Boutique? They don't make the cut, but Green Day and The Red Hot Chili Peppers get two albums each? Yup, this is definitely meant to promote CD's that your average "record" chain will have plenty of in catalog. Not that they try to hide it, but even so...they could have done a lot better.

    Wack, indeed.
  • Zen Arcade is a flawed album. It has moments of brilliance, but it's got some total crap filler on there too. Flip Your Wig is a far better album, as is New Day Rising, and (although this might be more controversial) even Metal Circus. I totally agree about the Ramones and Paul's Boutique though (how could anyone not have that album?).
  • THIS. LIST. IS. CRAP! No, I mean, really, quite a bit, so high up my thigh, FULL of crap:
    Jewel
    Faith Hill
    Shakira
    Shania Twain
    Fiddy
    fuckin' Nelly
I could go on. but I rest my case.

    "Tear down the wall."
  • Wow...I haven't heard Flip Your Wig in ages. Gotta pick that up. How do you feel about Candy Apple Grey, Carny?

I like all the Bob Mould songs on the album, but I'm not really into the Grant Hart ones at all, so before iTunes it was always weird listening to that album because I only liked every other song.

I agree about Zen Arcade, to be honest; I don't think they had quite enough for a double. Flip Your Wig is better (except for that GD baby song), but it seems whenever these lists come up Zen Arcade gets the love first, so I guess that's what I look for. I'll take Zen Arcade over New Day Rising, however - that one never clicked for me as well as most of their other stuff.
  • I just saw an ad on VH1 Classic for "The Definitive 200" so obviously Drano was correct about NARM's intentions with this list. Jeez...
