Councilwoman González, Developers and Community Leaders
Herald Turnaround in Contested 420 42nd Street Project

Councilwoman Sara M. González will hold a press conference to announce the
revised plan for the hotly contested project at 420 42nd Street in Sunset
Park.

Once considered an egregious example of what overdevelopment in Sunset Park
could look like, the proposed project at 420 42nd Street, has been reduced to
half it’s size.

A meeting was convened at the Councilwoman’s office of all 20 stakeholders in
the project, community members including CB 7 Chair Randy Peers, Board member
Cynthia Gonzalez, the Councilwoman's staff and advisors including Rick
Arbelo, legislative and policy director for City Councilman Erik Martin
Dilan, Chair of the Housing and Buildings Committee, to outline for the
developers the full breadth of the community opposition to their plans.

“Within 24 hours a second meeting was held at my office at which time I was
able to secure a commitment with a plan to cut the building in half and file
an amendment with the Department of Buildings to implement that decision. Is
this sort of reaction unprecedented? It might be. It is certainly unusual
in my experience. In fighting with developers I have always said we welcome
sensible development in the community and this compromise represents that
principle very well. So I believe the community will embrace this group as
welcome new neighbors who will partner with the community to better the
neighborhood,” Councilwoman González said.
