Bake Sale! Show me Your Goodies! — Brooklynian

Bake Sale! Show me Your Goodies!

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Now that we've got the details ironed out, heads up that the Fundraiser Bake Sale will be Sunday September 18th at PS 9 on St. Mark's between Vanderbilt and Underhill. It starts at noon and goes until the goodies go or until we all collapse into a group sugar coma. Come by, make a donation, get yer cake on, chat with the Daily Heights Hotties.

If you'd like to bake for the sale you can drop off anything you make at the site between 11:00 - 12:00 noon for us to wrap it and price it. If you can volunteer to "man the booth", let us know. If you'd like to bake but can't drop off your goods at that time, send a PM to Cupcake, Stacey, or Isa.

  • HOw difficult would it be to coordinate this with the saturday Farmers Market, or at least find a nearby location and post a lot of signs?

I volunteer to bake (unless its next weekend when I have houseguests)
  • Saturday seems soon to me, I kinda move at a much slower speed. But if others could get it organized for then, I would stay home Friday night to bake.
  • I agree that this weekend is...kinda soon.

What if we aimed to cook on Friday the 16th and have the event on Saturday the 17th?

We could either do it as a traditional bake sale and try to set up some tables near the farmer's market.

Or, we could try to get a space--maybe a church or restaurant that's usually closed during the day--and do it as a cover-charge thing. That would probably raise more money but be harder to set up. I also feel like we'd then have to provide drinks and stuff.

I could bake cookies, buns, and scones.
  • I will bake but I can't bake on that Friday, I would have to do it all on Saturday. I can make a hell of a lot of vegan fauxstess cupcakes.
  • Im willing to do it either weekend - but I agree next weekend sounds better. Like I told Cupcake - I live on Underhill bet. Dean and Bergen and I have a small front yard. We could set up there if you like or even in front of my house (don't worry my next door neighbors are family). But I agree the Farmer's Market is a great idea.
  • I can make biscotti, muffins, coffeecake... anything with streusel topping. My streusel kicks ass.
  • The Farmer's Market is brilliant if we could do that...I imagine you need some sort of permit, though? If it's next weekend, I could certainly bake something. Do you think Orleans Cheese Pie would be okay, or is that too messy? (Sort of like cheesecake)
  • Perhaps someone who is around this weekend could go to the Farmer's Market and ask people selling stuff there? Or does somebody live on G.A.P? Surely it would be legal for them...and some friends...to see on their own sidewalk.
  • I agree that the weekend of the 16th - 17th sounds best. If the Farmer's Market doesn't work out, does anyone have a hook up with a church or similar community type space?
  • There's hundreds of people walking their dogs before 9am at the park, desperate for coffee - I'm one of them. I'd love to patronize the Relief Giving Cupcake Mafia!

I've seen unlicensed vendors selling at GAP Saturday morning, on the sidewalk at the mouth of the park. But that was a lady with crocheted goods, not food. I'm guessing the Greenmarket is pretty serious about regulating their space . . .

The Park Slope Food Coop also tables there, if anyone is a member and willing to try to set it up through them.
  • Last year the Baking Against Bush bake sales went off without a hitch (as far as I know). There was one on Vanderbilt off Sterling (in front of the converted school) and one on 7th avenue between I think 7th and 8th.

Where are people thinking of donating the money we make? My two cents is that donating directly to a food bank in Houston would be awesome but of course I'm up for anything.
  • The Vanderbilt & Sterling location sounds good to me, cause it's um, right around the corner from me. So we could use my place as a staging ground. Foot traffic is good, but probably not as great as the Farmer's Market. Does anyone have big tables we could set up?

As far as a charity, I was just thinking the Red Cross, but I'm open to other ideas.
  • Actually the bake sale on Vanderbilt didn't seem to be doing so well. How about closer to where stuff is at, like on the Met block? Also, would Sunday be ok? Then we can have all day Saturday to bake. I'm just going to burst into the thread and change everything everyone said.
  • And by "staging ground" I mean "if you need to pee, you can use my bathroom".
  • Okay, first we need a location. Can someone committ to asking around at the Farmers Market this Saturday what it would take to crash there? If that's not feasible, we'll explore other locations. So anyone who has a connection to another space, indoor or outdoor, maybe a local business owner who won't mind if we camp out in front of their place?, ask around.

Once we determine the location, that will affect the date.

And seriously, if we set up outside, we will need tables. I have none.
  • My son goes to PS 9 and I am sure the principal would allow us to use the schoolyard on the weekend and I am sure there are many parents who would donate baked goods to our sale also.
  • It just occured to me that I can really only to Sunday, so if some people can do Saturday maybe we can have two days? I think just setting up shop on Vanderbilt will be ok but where exactly is the PS 9 schoolyard? I'm working on getting tables and chairs and signmakers as we type.
  • Great Isa!! PS 9 schoolyard is on St. Marks between Underhill and Vanderbilt.
  • We have a folding table that we could use. It's probably 2 x 4 feet, or thereabouts.

I am out of town this weekend, which is why I was suggesting scoping out the farmer's market, but not volunteering to do it myself...

Question to Andy and others: if we do this, should we make a little sheet explaining what DH is? I don't mean to make this into an advertising thing, but I imagine people will wonder "Who are you people, and how do I know you're actually giving the money to charity?" If we just say we're from some website, then that's iffy-sounding.

ETA: Is there really a lot of traffic on St. Mark's though? Vanderbilt seems more promising to me if we can't do it down by the Farmer's Market.
  • Well, if we promote the Bake Sale on the Message Board, through the school, and with Isa's signs, hopefully we can drive foot traffic.

Do we think we will have enough to spread across two days or should we just aim for Sunday the 18th?
  • I can bake for that weekend, but I probably will not be able to man the booth. My boyfriend's parents (whom I've never met) are coming to visit and staying with us that weekend and I'm not really sure if I'll be able to get away.
  • I am available either weekend (to bake and man tables) but I think the consensus was that most people would prefer next weekend.
  • I can bake and man the booth on next weekend.
Does anyone still like pumpkin pie?? That's the only thing I can bake..
  • i've got 2 folding card tables and folding chairs we could use.
  • So is it on for Sunday the 18th then?
Rita, your tables are like average card table size (4x4)?
I've gotten a few more bakers to volunteer as well, I think it will be awesome.

How do people feel about donating here?
    http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/

They are doing a lot of work in feeding all the displaced people and I'm sure they could use the money.
  • Let's wait until Stacey gets a chance to talk to the school until we officially set the date.

I also will be able to bake and man the booth.

No objections to dough going to the Food Bank of Houston.
  • Sounds good cupcake!
I have a source for tables and chairs but we would need to arrange transportation because they are on Cortelyou road. Maybe the school would be able to donate tables for the day? Or we can use Rita's and EmilyM's and maybe some others will turn up.
  • My husband is picking up my son today and I will have him talk to the principal so we can get an aswer today
  • OK my husband spoke to the principal and she says emphatically YES!!! All she asks is that we let her know what day we plan on doing it, what time we expect it to start and what time we expect it to end. She thinks this is fantastic and will put up any posters/flyers inside the school that we would like.

PS - I can help pick up tables and chairs with the car if we need.

yep - that sounds about right. they fit in a car and/or are light enough to carry pretty easily.
