IKEA yet? — Brooklynian

IKEA yet?

So anybody know when exactly IKEA will be opening up in Brooklyn? I've got a couple of things marked off in the catalog, but without a car the NJ and Long Island IKEAs are just too much hassle to go to. :D

  • next year at the earliest. more likely 2008 or 2009.
  • You know there's a free bus to and from the Jersey Ikea that leaves from the Port Authority on weekends every 30 minutes, right?

Or you could pay Armchair Warrior $55 to haul back whatever you get, which is much lower than the Ikea delivery price.

If you're car-free and want to get a lot of heavy furniture non-take-back-on-the-bus-able type stuff, I'd take the bus there one weekend to look around and decide what you want and then arrange to return later with AW (or find a friend with a car who's willing to take you).
  • It's hard to justify buying cheap particleboard furniture then paying an extra $100-plus dollars to have it delivered to my house. Might as well opt for a more expensive local furniture place with a lower delivery cost. In my past experiences with buying stuff at IKEA, the delivery cost has doubled the actual cost of the furniture!

Maybe it's because I'm "car-free", but Elizabeth NJ seems like such a trek. It means taking the subway to midtown, then the Ikea bus to the store, spending a couple of hours locating the stuff you want, then doing the whole mass-transport thing again, in reverse. Might as well kiss your whole Saturday goodbye! Then, there's the hassle of either paying $$$$$ for IKEA to deliver the stuff to my place, or locating someone relaible who will do it for slightly less $$$ (and an addl. $20. tip, maybe).

    Ugh.
  • Does anyone know of someone who offers some sort of ikea transportation service who is reliable? I need to buy a bed and it'll be too big for just a regular car.
  • most of Ikea is shit. Buy something made of real wood.
