ONE WAY NO WAY! PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION
Hello
After attending a community board meeting last week on changes the DOT plans to make on 4th 6th 7th Ave I am following up to the group. These changes will deeply impact the quality of life for residents living in Park Slope. More traffic, trucks, pollution, noise, and danger from speeding vehicles to the neighborhood.

Why do you mention 4th avenue in your email but not in your petitions?
You really don;t care what happens to 4th avenue do you? Just your private Idaho. -
Is it certain that this will be a bad thing for the neighborhood? If they narrow 6th and 7th avenues and adjust the lights so you will always hit a red light every couple of blocks, is there any chance that it could make 6th and 7th Avenues safer for pedestians and bikers? Just asking.

there's a pretty developed discussion on the proposal on the board
http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33470
so please add to that and not make a parallel thread here
thx for letting us know about the petition chipwich -

I think it's because the proposed changes to 4th Ave will make it safer for pedestrians. Whereas turning 6th and 7th into one-way streets will make them much more dangerous for pedestrians.

Ah, whereas you care deeply about the pedestrians of the Slope and the residents of 4th Avenue? Not just how the changes will slow down your drive from your own neighborhood to somewhere else?

I don't think chipwhich is the only one arguing their own self-interest here. -
Because, after much thought, I actually do not think turning 6th or 7th ave one way will hurt anything. But I do think squeezing 4th ave will hurt everything.

I drive to work every day.
To make all the lights on PPW you need to drive 32 mph.
To make all the lights on 8th ave you need to drive 37 mph.
The maximum number of blocks I can drive on 6th ave before I hit a red is 3-4. Which isn't enough time to get to those speeds unless you slam on your brakes at the end. (yes, there are exceptions)
I take PPW and 8th because it takes me half the time, because I'm driving twice as fast.
If they didn't time 8th ave and PPW correctly, are they going to time the lights on 4th,6th and 7th correctly? I don't have any faith in the DOT to properly rehab the streets for neighborhood traffic. This plan only benefits through traffic. Furthermore, the cross streets are way too narrow for this plan. -

I don't undestand your petition. The first point, making your argument about one-way streets, is straightforward enough. But you should be more aggressive in attacking the parts of the plan you don't like. Your second and third points (asking that the community be involved in the process and that the street changes be part of a larger traffic plan), it could be argued, are fairly good descriptions of what is actually happening.
Are not the presentations they have made at community board meetings and other places involving the community? At least to the limit of the law? Wouldn't they tell you that their plan is a part of a larger plan?
I am with you. I think the plans for Sixth and Seventh sound like madness, but it seems just as crazy to expect the D.O.T. to have run all this through focus groups or something. ... I also appreciate that you are taking action. I'm just, like... it's like that old saying, "Don't kick all over the place, just aim for the nuts."

I noticed flyers plastered all around the hood this week about the upcoming meeting. Curoiusly, they all have left out any mention of 4th ave. Only 6th and 7th. -
I think 7th Ave should be made into a pedestrian mall.
