Bake Sale! Show me Your Goodies!

Ok its seems like we are all set - I suggest we start at 12:00 on 9/18? Doe that sound good to all? You can PM me and I will give you my cell phone number if anyone needs to be picked up that day. I am really excited to be able to do this especially with my great neighbors.
PS - Rita are you the sister to Dr. Parikh (sorry if I am spelling his name wrong). -
What quantity of baked goods should we aim for? should we arrange a baked-goods-dropoff prior to the starttime?
on a side note, my mom was a professional baker for years, and she found that when wrapping things in saran, the better/tighter the saran on the product (giant cookie, muffin, whatever), the better it sold. -
Yeah, I guess I should buy some saran wrap and wrap each thing individually, eh, rather than just having a big sticky tray of buns? Mmmm, buns.

That is the power of shiny things! The tighter the saran, the smoother the shine! -
Does anyone want to hang signs up around the hood with me? Maybe even meet somewheres and make hand made signs with purty colors next week sometime?
-
Just let me know Isa - I am more than willing to help. I can even make copies (color and b&w) at the office.
-
I'm writing a press release to get the sale out to some media and blogs, so let me just make sure I have my facts straight:
Bake Sale to raise money for the Houston Food Bank
Sunday September 18th
12 pm to 3 pm (? should we go even later?)
PS 9 schoolyard - St. Marks between Underhill and Vanderbilt
Items we're selling:
Cinnamon Buns, Cupcakes, Brownies, Cookies, Pumpkin Pie, some wheat free and vegan baked goods as well
Anything else I should add? Should I add that we're mostly memeber of the DH boards? -

Oh cool! So I can meet up with you on Tuesday and give you some signs and Wednesday they can be hung up. If people want to meet up and make signs just for fun that would be cool too. Does it seem like I love bake sales a little too much? -
Cool I think the flyer sounds great -
And who doesn't like a bake sale? -
Add scones to your list! Scones is the easiest thing I know how to make. I can make ginger and/or plain (vanilla-ish). I'll also make orange buns (like cinnamon, only not), and maybe snickerdoodle cookies.
-
I'll make biscotti and mocha-chip (plus maybe another variety like pumpkin-apple or butterscotch-pecan) muffins.
-
I think 12 - 5pm might be necessary to send all these baked goods on their way.
Also, I was listening to NPR this morning and they were talking about how there is still 3 months left of Hurrincane Season and the Red Cross is trying to help Katrina victims while replenishing their supplies so they are not totally decimated in case another one hits. Could we split the proceeds between the Houston Food Bank and the Red Cross?
I have a table cloth for the tables we set up. It is a fairly large size. -
SNICKERDOOLDES!!! My favorite - they may not make it to the table (he he he) I may have to purchase them for myself

I think we should also let people know that they can donate $ in lieu of baking or even (gasp Cupcake will have my head on the next one) buy a cake to donate to the fundraiser. -
So can I just show up with my pumpkin pies on that day or do I need to talk to Stacey, Cupcake or Isa?
-
We should probably arrange to meet up a bit before noon to
--package any baked goods that have not arrived in lovely-looking saran wrap
--set up the tables attractively
--figure out prices and mark things accordingly.
It seems like we'll have to see all the stuff together to work out pricing, because what if one person makes her cupcakes $2.50 and someone else says $1.50? Or one person makes 5-cookie bags and someone does 20-cookie bags--they shouldn't be the same price. Seems like it would be easier to just bring some marking pens and buy some stickers, and sticker everything right before we start.
(Caveat: I've never really done a bake sale before.) -

Yep that is the best way. I think we should make the prices a bit higher though.

Prices or "minimum donation"?
also
- everyone should write a list of what's IN what they baked (especially if things contain nuts).
-it would probably be helpful if everyone stockpiled and brought some key food bags, etc in case some people buy a lot of stuff. -
Also, little plates and forks for things like pie. I think minimun donation is a great idea.
-
Ok - I will bring the stickers and pens. I will also have a cooler in case it is very warm and we need to keep some pies, cakes whatever on ice.
Ariel makes a good point about making sure to list what is in the baked goods. I agree with the minimum donation idea.
We have a dining room in our building that will donate some paper plates, napkins, forks and spoons for us. -
You guys are super!
I am so excited. -
As I told Isa my son iwants to set up a small table and bake some doggie treats to sell to our four-legged neighbors with his table donations to go to the Humane Society so let people know there will be treats for pets and their owners
-
Agree all around. Substituting "minimum donation" for "price" reminds people its going for a good cause. Shall anyone interested in helping out with the organizing agree to meet at 11am to set-up, pricing and wraping?
I can also volunteer to bring extra saran wrap and foil. -
Should we agree in advance roughly how much should be in each package? I.e. one scone, one buns, four cookies, whatever? Because I'll try to wrap up my stuff in advance so it's easier to transport.
(I really wish I weren't out of town this weekend as I am now DYING to bake!) -
Can I bring a whole pie or should I cut in pieces, wrap individually?
Any suggestions? -

I would keep it whole and cut as needed, but I'm just one guy talking.
Any suggestions? -

I was actually thinking something along the same lines. Reading about all the trapped dogs just makes me want to bawl. I'll definitely buy some treats!

of course i commend your spirit, but a little reality check... a number of people spending a whole day baking and selling to raise a couple hundred bucks (and fatten up your neighbors) when the govt has already committed $60 billion? not very efficient, and money isn't really the issue here. if you are going to help, let a refugee move in with you, give them a job, or go down there a few months from now and help build houses. or if thats asking to much, send all your baked goods south - we've got enough around here! sorry to be a party-pooper...

Dearest Guest -come on now be for real!!
Have you ever heard the saying "every bit helps" -
Goddam it! He's right! The bake sale is off! And we were soooo close to saving the world.

Thanks Stacey, I would also add that the bake sale, as I see it, is also about community building. Meeting the neighbors and such and building community ties so that when something does happen, whether it be in our hood or across the globe, people who want to react as a community as opposed to just reacting individually, will already have some kind of structure in place.

Also the fact that it will be held at a school and involve kids/ be highly visible to kids sets the example that no action and no person is too small to be of service.
