Interesting Post about 323 Prospect Place

My friend has a blog that focuses on urban design and architecture, and he wrote a long post about the oddly placed house at 323 Prospect Place (the one at the corner of Underhill that's rotated away from the rest of the street grid). Definitely worth checking out for anyone who's walked by and wondered about it.

    The man who owns the building is always there. He sweeps outside most mornings. I don't understand why the blogger didn't just ask him the origins of the building's layout instead of committing all of that space to speculation. The owner is quite the activist. For years, whenever I'd pass him on the street, he'd give me the black power fist. Loved that!

    Could just be that he's never passed by while the owner was around. I live just a couple of blocks from there, pass by all the time, and haven't ever seen the owner outside.

    I was wondering that myself, though I'd bet the owner has no clue about what was going on with his property in the 1880's.

    There's joy and passion in speculating about things, doing research, and uncovering information on your own.

    NEWS FLASH: comment to original post says that the old Flatbush Turnpike was the original cause. the old lot lines were oriented to an ancient Flatbush Turnpike winding through the modern blocks. see this old map on Flickr:

    btw, it's not just that block where the old lot lines prevail. It's also true on the two blocks to the north, between it and Dean St. (it's also true for a couple of lots just on the other side of Underhill.) compare old map with current map:
