So who went out tonight, on this most horrible of days??? — Brooklynian

So who went out tonight, on this most horrible of days???

All of my scheduled events got canceled tonight. This was a good thing.
Who among us decided that the snow, wind, hail, and puddles on the corner were no match for their desire to drink copiously and cop a feel on a frigid stranger?
Or are we all saving it for St. Patrick's Day?

  • I was at work until midnight. Then I just wanted to go home. :(
  • I wanted to go out last night. really. but then I just wanted to sit on my sofa and eat chinese food and read my really crappy book. so that's what I did. I'm not sure I'll go out tonight, either. everyone is pants at shoveling in brooklyn
  • In heavy snow boots, my husband and I made it as far as BAM via the Vanderbilt bus (on the way there) and taking the Q train one stop (on the way back). If you had the shoes for it, it wasn't so bad. I may have been extraordinarily motivated by boredom, though, because I'm trying to finish a bunch of papers this weekend and am basically not planning to go out again.
  • I'm impressed, Emily! This stuff is SO hard to walk in. It took me about twice as long as usual to walk the four blocks home from the shuttle last night, and I was already pretty worn down from my work week. By the time I made it home I was just flat pooped, so I settled in with the new Paul Auster book and called it a night.
  • We went out, as usual... Couple drinks at FF, small bite at BB, and the trudge home through the stinging, freezing rain.
  • i was loving the snow - my first trip to the willy'b since i can remember - and then after dinner & drinks we went up to the apple store by central park and my friend bought his first laptop. walked from 5th ave to 1st at 1am and it was still hailing/snowing/amazing. my legs do feel like they got a work out from that special snow walk, though.

i'm from new england, this used to be how winter started in october.
  • I went out cycling. On the way back I took a pizza on my bike from the slope because no one was doing delivery. It wasn't even frozen through by the time I got home.
  • My BF and I had tickets to a party at the Russian baths. Since we had to wear swimsuits, I'd probably have skipped it if I were on my own, but he really wanted to go, and I'm glad we did, because it was fun and different. Needless to say, it wasn't very crowded.
  • Whoa, Sprite, that's interesting. The other day, boy and I were JUST talking about what it would take to do a party at the russian baths. So, how many people were there? Did they have a DJ? Was it a private thing or did the organizers let "the public" know about it? How much? How did you find out about it? How was the food, if any?
    So interested....
  • It's a public event, though I'm not sure how my BF found out about it. (I think he's on some e-mail list.) The organizers had parties there on Valentine's Day for the last two years, which sold out. They actually had staggered entry tickets this time so more people would be able to come. But the weather threw that plan off - they started an hour late, and a lot of people didn't come.

They did have a band at the beginning and a DJ at the end. I'm told they were giving away free vodka and pierogies early on; my BF got some vodka, but I think we were too late for the pierogies. So we danced, steamed in the saunas, plunged in the cold pool, and checked out the other guests.

FYI, only the guys manning the front desk have keys to the lockers, so every few minutes a man was in the women's changing room unlocking a locker for someone. It was weird, but we all worked around it. :)

ETA - I had the wrong link above. It's fiixed now.
  • This is great Sprite, thanks.
  • The winter would've felt imcomplete without somethng resembling a true snow fall. So I was thrilled. Not the soft, fluffy snow, but better than the sleet storm from February. I walked from Washington Ave over to Southpaw and had too many vodkas, so looks like Odouls will be the beer of choice today.
  • Last night, I totally fell on my ass and re-sprained/strained my ankle on St Johns and Washington during the storm. A very kind stranger helped me up. So neighbor who ever you were, thank you.

I'm at home nursing this ankle, since I sprained it at Southpaw on Purim and now again.
  • That sucks, BL. I tweaked my ankle and hip yesterday too. Not quite sure where, because I slipped many times. I broke this ankle in 3 places 20 years ago and it's normally pretty stable, but now it's very "off". So know that not too far away, somebody else is nursing their ankle too.
  • sprite,

I am into Russian baths -- which one did you go to? Did you like it?

    thx,
    bay
  • Stayed in for most of the night, ordered in from Olive Vine, watched "The Manchurian Candidate" (yes -- the Sinatra one) and did some work...ventured outside around 10:30pm...so calm, so peaceful, the air so sharp and cold...
  • I loved going out this morning and seeing all the neighbors shoveling, walking slowly and therefore chatting...it felt very homey
  • had to really coax myself to go out through that mess but was glad i did. after making it of the apartment i headed over to here, http://www.issueprojectroom.org/, to see this: http://www.doritchrysler.com/ThOrchestra.html

in summary i enjoyed an evening of musical pieces played on the theremin with various accompaniment. very interesting crowd to say the least.

I don't know the name, but it was on E. 10th between 1st and Ave A. I'd never been to a Russian bath before, or any type of bath place, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I guess I was expecting more pools - there was only the one cold plunge pool, but no whirlpools or anything. I did enjoy one of the saunas a lot. It was fun and different. I might do it again.
  • We have a friend who used to invite us to a place called Emerald Spa in Queens, which is probably more of a complete Russian spa experience. A bitch to get to from Brooklyn, but fun once you get there. They have a swimming pool, a whirlpool, sauna, steam room, massages, etc.
