Subject: buildings that don't shovel their snow

walking down Union St, there's at least 4 large buildings that are leaving us all to die a messy death, tangled in dog leashes and stroller wheels in a heap on the icy pavement. [I didn't actually fall down, but I did spend a couple hours Friday and Sat de-icing my little patch of sidewalk, so I'm pissed]
when does the city give out the tickets?

the worst locations, on the south side of the street:

The parking lot between 8th and 7th Aves

The corner of Union and 7th, where we wish Park Slope Fitness got their exercise shoveling snow. Note to gym seekers: the Body Reserve always deals with their snow.

The SW corner of Union and 5th Ave, which never ever does the right thing. The people in the store do 5th Ave, but around the corner, one long icy slide to the subway.

    just call 311. I do it basically 36 hours after a serious snow fall. people are assholes and they should at least be ticketed for their assholery.

    it's so icy out there now in those unshoveled areas...9th Street between 5th and 6th was an ice skating rink last night.

    For everyone's information, in accordance with the leases, the corner is the responsibility of Brown Harris Stevens to shovel the snow. The Slope Fitness is responsible for the area around their entrance, and the space between the bus stop and the railing.
    If there are complaints, please direct them to MaryAnn Albano at Brown Harris Stevens about them not shoveling the snow.

    Yeah, I was pretty pissed at how bad it was Saturday night. On my way to the bar, I realized that I would have to cut myself off at an early point just to be able to walk home without falling on my ass. Evil things will befall those that cut me off from my last Hoegaarden.

    yeah, that kinda thing makes me mad too. My building is half-ass shoveled. Who ever is in charge of it did a quick pass making a small walk way (hey, at least they tried), while most of the rest of the block (save for one apartment) completely did their sections of sidewalk. Seriously, the amount of lazyness is totally f-ed up in this nabe. Everywhere I've ever lived, when I had a shovel I'd scoop. When I was growing up I even did the neighbor's walk and driveway.

    Yeah, I noticed a few realtors are too busy taking 6% commissions to break out the shovels, and a few banks are too busy processing ATM fees to do the same.

    I love that you can see property lines passive-aggressively staked out. I swear some people must get out the ol' protractor to make sure they aren't clearing one millimeter more than they are required to.

    And yeah, kosherdave why don't these damn kids today get a little hustle in 'em to earn some easy shoveling bucks?

    Can I get an "amen" to the idea that scooping a 6-inch wide but still icy groove does not count as "clearing the sidewalk"?

    Do you know how the city comes down on that? I thought it was the owner of the building that is issued the ticket (if they ever actually issue them, which I have doubts about.)

    The cost of the violation is passed on to the tenant.

    Well, you might want to mention that you've been getting complaints as well. In my experience commercial tenants are far more responsive to their landlords, especially when the complaints aren't coming from customers.

    The opposite is true. Merchants are more willing to listen to their customers who are paying them than to Landlords who have the perception of taking from them. It's usually the merchant that has more communal interaction than the owner. So, people would get a better response by complaining to the merchant, especially if that merchant has roots in the area and a solid customer base.

    Anyone notice that the steps leading down into the Union M/R station are still covered in ice blocks on both sides of the stairwell? There's about 6 inches down the middle where you can walk, and that's it. I watched an old lady in front of me almost kill herself this morning... And I wouldn't have been able to help her, since I was also holding on to the railing for dear life.

    Call 311? Is that the answer? I know the MTA is a mess, but I expect then to be better than that, 2 days after the snow has stopped.

    Tell the station agent. I guess I took a different stairwell, which was clear. It was more or less clear even by Sunday noon - more like 6" of ice on either side for just the first few stairs. Manhattan-bound side.
