Donations for Pets in New Orleans

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
As many of you already know, there are thousands of pets in New Orleans that are in desperate need of help. We are shipping items and an SUV full of pet-related items is driving down to NO on Saturday. If you would like to contribute please stop by HouseBroken at 603 Vanderbilt Avenue (corner of Bergen). Our store hours are: Wed-Friday 4-9pm, Sat 12-9 and Sunday 12-6. If you stop by and we are not open, please leave items at Beast (across the street). Also if you would like to foster an animal from Katrina please let me know. The SUV will be returning full of animals in need of homes.

Following are the items they are in desperate need of (they don't have to be new):
Crates
Leashes
Collars
Litter and litter pans
Food (Unopened)
Bedding materials
Gloves
Toys
Bowls
Treats

  • Wow ... That is REALLY great !! I'll definitely be stopping by !! :D:D:D
  • Argh! A few weekends ago I disposed of some cat toys my cat had rejected by leaving them on the street for people to pick up. I'll see if we can pick some stuff up this week. You guys need cat stuff as well as dog stuff, right?
  • Yes, we definitely need cat stuff.... Litter and litter pans are also desperately needed.

    Thank you
  • Subject: mailing items to HouseBroken...

    vivian,

it is great that you are doing this! is there an organization in new orleans you are working with?

can people mail things to you?
    what is your zip code?

    thanks.

    cat.
  • The SUV is leaving Saturday morning so we need everything at the store before Saturday. If you want to ship items directly check out www.bestfriends.org.

We are sending our items to BestFriends.org and LSU vet school. Most of the pet rescue groups are located at one shelter and that is where the rescue operations are managed. We are hoping to have enough items to spread among all groups. If you have any other questions I can be reached at 718-622-0600

Also just a reminder that foster homes will be needed.
  • The name of the shelter is the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. They are expecting to rescue more than 50,000 pets.

  • I'd be interested in fostering a dog, but I gotta convince the wife. When will you be returning?

Also, folks, remember you can always donate to the ASPCA and Human Society disaster relief funds.
  • what are your hours? i have some things, but could only come by after work or early saturday morning.
  • Subject: people to foster animals ... vivian contact info...

    hi vivian,

I have posted your info on a few other lists and I have a bunch of people who have said they would foster animals, as well as one reporter who would like to contact you, as well as one person who said they are going down there and could also take supplies if you need extra help.

what is your email address or can you PM me?

    Thanks!

    cat.

She says at the top "Our store hours are: Wed-Friday 4-9pm, Sat 12-9 and Sunday 12-6."

Nice and late! I'm planning to stop by the pet store on Vbilt on my way home today, and then drop the stuff off right afterwards. Just have to get there in time for the pet store...
  • Hi Cat-

Thank you... that would be great if we can get more cars to take stuff. I can be reached at 718-622-0600 or email me at [email protected]

I would love to get the info out there so feel free to gime my info away:)

    Thanks again
    Vivian

There are plenty of venues already for donations for people. It may not have occurred to you, but many of the people in New Orleans care deeply about their pets and would welcome any assistance with their care. In fact, many of the people who refused to leave during the evacuation, did so because they were not permitted to take their pets with them and they refused to abandon them.

As is obvious to all the regulars on this site, I'm not exactly a PETA activist, but I still recognize the value of people contributing to a cause like this. There's no need to bash anyone for contributing to a cause that's important to them. You could always make an argument against contributing to any cause that you happened to think wasn't the single most important one (e.g. "How dare you contribute to literacy programs when there are people starving in the world?" or "How can you contribute to your alumni association when public schools need the money so much more?" or "How come you only care about homeless people after a natural disaster? You should be contributing to Habitat for Humanity with every paycheck!"). The fact is that there's plenty of room for charitable contributions of all types and people should be applauded, not criticized for contributing in whatever way they can.

On Saturday, I'll be driving an old school bus down to NO with supplies for trolls (they need our love and support, too, people!). I am now taking donations- here are some suggestions: old bones (chicken, beef, pork, etc) with good marrow and gristle, flea combs and collars, any clothing (even if it's your old oil-changing shirt, that's okay!), mortar (dry- don't worry, there's plenty of water to mix it with!) for rebuilding the bridges that they live(d) under, and tic tacs (those Listerine strips are far too strong!), and, of course, Ms. Manners books (what better way to occupy your otherwise worried mind than with etiquette?! And CLEARLY, trolls DO need to work on etiquette!).

PM if you are able to help!
