That's not Crown Heights. That's deep in the heart of Bed Stuy. I say check it out during the day, night, and on the weekend. I'm not too sure I'd be so into it and I grew up in East New York!

im about 600 miles away right now and really have no idea about the place...
would you recommend it if you were straight outta the midwest?
sounds scary from what ive been reading...
any ideas? -
I would definitely not recommend moving from the midwest to Bed-Stuy! As far as ideas...are you in the market for a place, or are you already locked in to that location?
-
no not locked in.....
which is good but i do need to find a place by saturday -

Am I the only person that thinks moving into some place sight unseen from out of town is just about one of the worst ideas even? You need to come out here and scope for yourself before putting your money down. Us randoms's versions of "safe" and "a cool place to be" might be nowhere near yours.

It seems relatively close to Pratt Institute. Are you going to be a student there? There may be Pratt students living in in that neighborhood. Either way, you might consider trying to get a hold of someone familiar with the area through Pratt.

Subject: that is nowhere near pratt
stick to the keywords clinton hill, fort greene, prospect heights in your searches, in my opinion.
other nabes too, just post if you're unsure. -
no im not a student at pratt, but i am only in town for 6 months, so its not long term.

having worked in bed-stuy for the parks dept. a few years ago up @ von king, which is in the area... it ain't the safest part of Bed-Stuy. it's better than it was even 5 years ago but i think you'll be in for quite a shock, moving from the midwest (unless you're coming from, say, south side of chicago). and even then; each block in bed-stuy has its own energy.
also, if you don't have a car, i think your closest train is the G @ bedford/nostrand? a location like that is not recommended if you don't know (and are comfortable with) exactly what you're getting into. -

Look at the sublets on craigslist. Many landlords won;t rent for only 6 months. Also check out the shares. -

Sometimes it can't be helped. I had never been to New York, ever, and interviewed for a position over the phone and 'net. I got the job, and ended up paying about twice what I wanted in rent, with outrageous broker/security fees, because I had to find a place quickly and my credit sucked at the time.
