can anyone tell me

Walk around after midnight and I'm sure you'll find out.

I think this is the same guy who is moving here from somewhere in the midwest and is looking for a place to live. It's a valid question. Be nice.
-
Originally from the Midwest myself, I can say that our (peeps in the neighborhood) opinions of what's sketchy and what's not is probably very different of what his/her opinion would be. I think that walking around at night is a good idea, if at all possible... If the choice is going to be made sight unseen... well, I don't envy being in that position.
-
If it is the same person, they ARE moving here sight unseen.
Also, I don't think telling someone unfamiliar with New York to wander around at night alone in Bed Stuy was meant as a friendly, helpful suggestion. If so, sorry, but it came across as "Get mugged, clueless loser." Not helpful.
It's pretty easy, if you are at all familiar with that neighborhood (which I am not, so I can't answer the question) to at least tell them what parts to definitely avoid. If there are parts that may be more of a matter of opinion, those can be suggested with the caveat "You'll probably want to check it out in person and see if YOU feel comfortable there." -
If the intent was as you suspect, it would have been much funnier if he would have just said "Get mugged, clueless loser"!

About 2 months ago, a couple of my friends were visiting from the Twin Cities- they were uneasy at Flatbush and 7th Ave at midnight, a situation that wouldn't set my spidey sense a-tingling at all. Also, my wife would have been a bit more hesitant if she would have walked our new block at night. I get what you're saying- if an area makes one of us uneasy, it's probably going to have an even worse effect on a new transplant, but just because we're comfortable doesn't mean that they will be, too... if you were to add your caveat, I'd be okay with that...If it is the same person, they ARE moving here sight unseen.
WHY? WHY? WHY?! If you're going to move across the country, spend a little money and a few days checking it out first-hand!
Side note- the smallish, scraggly black cat by your building (I'm assuming that you live right by the shuttle, right?), does he/she belong to anyone? I thought that he/she was going to follow me home the other night. The cat was meowing at me in a pleading way- I felt bad walkin' away...
-
Oh! I wonder if it was Window! (We started calling her that because she lived for a long time in the basement window of our building, 593). I haven't seen her for several months, though.
If it IS the same cat, the story I was told was that she was abandoned by someone in the building next door (the brick one with the black front door) when they moved. On really hot days last summer I put water out for her, and once or twice a little food, but I didn't want her to get dependant on me since I couldn't take her in. I called a few shelters about her, but no one had room, and around that time I stopped seeing her around. She is a SWEETHEART. -
She is a SWEETHEART
The cat in question certainly was- I was relieved when it stopped following me. I don't think that I could have left it on my doorstep if it would have continued, but we already have two cats and I think that it would be problematic to introduce a new one to the mix... that, and I think that once you go beyond two cats, you run the risk of being labeled a crazy cat person! -
Yeah...I have only one, but he is a bit of a primadonna when it comes to other cute things in the house and would definitely flip out if I brought another cat in. Plus we're not really supposed to have pets at all, but since we're such good tenants (and really, it's just a cat) our landlords ignore him. I think bringing in strays would be pushing their patience, though.
But if anyone wants a kitty...
Howdy, Stranger!
