Will Le Gamin Survive??
I went to Le Gamin on Wednesday for dinner, and we were the only customers! I think they are doing very well with brunch, but I can't imagine that can keep them open. I think its a great place for a light meal and a tasty desert. And they have an $18 3-course special for dinner. Please go and help keep them alive! (No, I don't work there.)

I love this place, but I love crepes anytime (although my wife doesn't which is one reason I don't go there more often). I'm not sure why it's not doing better - maybe location, maybe menu, which is kind of limited as not everyone wants a crepe, sandwich, quiche or mussels for dinner (seems like all they have).

i really love that place, and i don't go there enough - i do find their food to be more of the 'lite-bites' variety, though, and wish the menu had some more satisfying meals.

I walked down there the other day after hearing how great the coffee is but it seemed so unwelcoming that I kept on walking. I will try again soon the next time my boyfriend and I need a new place for lunch.

?? it is plenty welcoming! nice staff, pleasant garden, magazines available... -
I keep wanting to go there, but I don't eat eggs or seafood, and that seems to preclude pretty much their entire menu...

What about crepes? Croque Monsieur? -

err, no, still plenty of crepes you can enjoy... -

Crepes are made with eggs FYI. -

True, but many people who don't like eggs in their pure form will eat them as components of other items. She didn't say she was allergic to them or anything. -

hey snarky, I figured she was a vegan or allergic. -

I'm afraid that Oiseau is giving me a little too much credit. I'm allergic to seafood, but the egg thing is just a violent dislike. If it tastes of eggs, I don't eat it--so bread is fine. I guess crepes are getting unfairly maligned in my book because of their resemblence to omelets. -

They're more like really thin pancakes. Maybe if you got ones with a sweet filling instead of savory they wouldn't remind you of omelets so much.

My favorite meal there right now is the merguez {sp?} sandwich, {spicy lamb sausage}, with roasted red peppers and mustard, no eggs. mmmm I can tell you that Le Gamin is doing well, so please don't worry. :P They have incredible rushes and quiet downtimes like most other restaurants.
I speak to new people that visit my shop numerous times a week that live only a block or three away from us, and never, ever have walked down Vanderbilt in the Atlantic Ave. direction. Always surprised to find out what's going on.. Do you know about art supplies at Simon Lui on Dean? The guy who sells antiques out of a garage right around the corner from Nick's, which is a classic greasy spoon? Nalani's? Beast? Housebroken? May, who will do a beautiful job washing your laundry? My shop, RedLipstick? Bergen Street Studios? Cash machine at Mailboxes across from me? Bicycle Station, with the best bike mechanic in Brooklyn {says me and thousands of others}? "comfort" Dominican food across the street {can't spell the name, not even going to try:->} Teryl's Barber Shop, an institution? Atlas Car Repair between Dean and Pacific that's been there for over 45 years? The smoothies at Hibiscus? etc... I feel like our few blocks are a microcosm of what Brooklyn is about.
I guess sometimes it seems some people on this board want all kinds of new businesses to come to Prospect Heights, but don't support the ones who are already here. Please, do support your neighborhood businesses, as it has a powerful trickle down effect. Ultimately, everyone benefits with improved property values and higher quality of life and services. Successful businesses are what bring in others. Think about it. If people who want to open up see others closing down, they go elsewhere, because they can see the neighborhood wasn't supportive.
Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. 10% off anything in my shop if you come into RedLipstick this Saturday or Sunday and mention this rant. hehe, there's an experiment for you {where I'm putting my money where my mouth is}. Please Note: Sunday, I'm opening at 12, because I MUST get some cake from the bake sale first. -
The guy who sells antiques out of a garage right around the corner from Nick's
Really? This sounds cool. What kind of antiques? Is it more like a junk shop? Or junque? Or vintage consignment antiquey? Or frilly dolls antiquey? schmanteeky...? -
emily, le gamin has one crepe that's filled with some kind of oniony filling (can't remember what, and I'm ashamed, b/c it's my favorite meal there). SO GOOD! and not even remotely eggy.

It's just a packed garage, he opens it at odd times, and puts the furniture out on the sidewalk. You pick through some crap to find the treasures. My friend Jen got some gorgeous blond wood end tables from the '50's there, dirt cheap. Right behind Nick's. Who knew, right? There's no sign or anything.

I rarely go past Soda ... but then I rarely make it all the way to Flatbush (well, I'm usually under Flatbush in the train station). and I'm rarely anywhere during the day. on that note ...

I think this Saturday and/or Sunday I will make a real effort to wander around this part of Vanderbilt. also, I'm planning to go to see Monday night football at that new place. so ... working on it.
(and really looking forward to the Korean place) -
Also, back on topic, the chestnut cream dessert crepes are so good they're evil.

And, as long as the hot weather lasts, both their Nicoise and Le Gamin (roast chicken) salads are very nice...

True, although Nicoise contains egg in its purest (hard-boiled) form. -
I love me the egg and mayo salad at le gamin. Sorry Emily.
I will have to stop by the bake sale (mm... bake) before football on sunday.
SJE, do you do men's clothes? I've bought presents for various females from you before, but for some reason I never noticed men's togs. -
Yes, I now carry men's tees and a growing selection of button-downs.

All very wearable, I might add. I'm eyeing a particular shirt, myself. -
Hopefully, it's that shirt that goes well with cigars! :P

so how is the coffee?
Howdy, Stranger!
