hair cut?

Yeah, I went to La Dolce Vita once. They seem to prey on people new to town by handing out "special" offers like candy. I've never gotten my hair cut in the immediate area, but recently I got a major post-wedding chop at Beehive in Wmsburg, and I was really happy with it. The stylist's name was Jessica.

I go to Arte Salon It's not local (bkln), but I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend it. It was recommended to me by my sister, and I have sent many friends there, who are now also regular customers. I see Joseph, the owner.
Other people seem to like it too.

I'm not sure if you're male or female, Guest, but if you like an old-school barber, there's a good place on 7th avenue in PS. I think it's called Anthony's or something.

thanks for all the tips. yeah, la dolce vita was DIS-GUSTING! (i'm female by the way). dirty, unprofessional and charged $35 for a blowdry that i didn't even know was extra. they were smoking cigarettes in the place while i was getting everything done. well, i guess you get what you pay for.
how much does beehive or arte salon charge for a cut? i don't really do anything fancy or super-styled. but i want someone that knows what they're doing, and something relatively affordable (i get my hair cut like once every 3-5 months!)
thanks again! -
Arte is not the cheapest. Joseph charges $100 but he's the owner, so no tip is required. The other stylists are cheaper but you should tip them. I don't do anything fancy with my hair either, but if you want something easy, stylish and well cut, I would highly recommend him. It's worth the price, esp. if you only get your hair cut 2 or 3 times a year. And he's really nice too.

cool. thanx for the info. man, i just checked out the website....$55 for a BLOWDRY??? call me naive, but why so expensive for a freakin blowdry??? i just don't understand...
i may give them a call though. how far in advance do you have to make an appt w/ joseph? -
Beehive is either $65 or $55 depending on stylist.

Joseph is very accommodating with scheduling. A few days is probably fine.

Subject: Medusa
Medusa on 7th ave in park slope was recommended to me a while back and I have had nothing but great experiences there. I have referred many many friends who are all happy return customers. My stylist is Kelly, she is very cool and kind of just "goes with it." the kind of person who can't re-create an exact color or style of cut because she is more artsy. There are some great solid hairdresses there if you are looking for something more traditional or reliable! -
thanks for the tip on medusa! i've walked by that place and it always looks interesting. how much are cuts? and are blow-drys extra?
basically, i'm just looking for someone who won't leave me looking like my hair just got cut by a flow-bee.
something cool, but not too out there. and VERY low maitenence (ie..i usually don't even comb my hair in the morning). -
Subject: Medusa
I have been going to Megan at Medusa for almost 3 years now and she is great. Nothing too funky, but totally reliable -- I have been pleased with every cut I've ever gotten from her. They charge $45.
Interestingly, there are 2 Medusas. The original (where I go) is on 7th Ave and 1st Street (across from the elementary school/flea market). A year or so ago there was some falling out and the owner and his son left and opened ANOTHER Medusa on 7th Ave closer to Flatbush. Now the stylists own the original Medusa. My stylist tells me that the 2 Medusas aren't related at all (despite sharing a name and a font). Anyone know the inside scoop? -
Subject: Hair!
As much as I try to keep my dollars in the 'hood... I get my hair cut at Astor Place Barbers (I am a woman). 15 bucks.... See Lucia! She does a great job. My boyfriend and some of my freinds have started going there as well. -
I used to go to Astor too, until my guy, Ray, left and opened his own place in Midtown. He's actually excellent, but it's just way too much of a pain in the ass to go there now. I certainly have no other reason to be in Midtown.
Astor is pretty shitty to their employees. Ray was always complaining about them, and then when he left, they put up a sign saying that he had gone to Israel for good and wouldn't be back. Very shady behavior... -
Subject: Agreed, props to Medusa
I've liked what they've done with my hair - and it's not outrageous pricy.
I've also gone to the Aveda school in SoHo and gotten cheap cuts there (same with Bumble & Bumble) - the students cuts for cheap. -
I too am a La Dolce Vita victim.
At any rate, the best cuts I've gotten in the city were from Arrojo studio in Soho... a bit pricey -- but as a result it looks better longer and takes less time to do. If you're dependant on a dryer, than in my mind you have the wrong cut.
Been to Aveda school (on Spring St.) was an ok experience. At $20 it was definitely budget friendly.
My Beehive report is not so hot. Although the people were cool to chat with, I wasn't particularly happy with the results.
I know initally the discussion was about Bklyn salons, but these were my general picks. -
Isn't the Arrojo studio the one with the guy Nick Arrojo from "What Not To Wear"?

I go to Layla at Le Chandelier in Park Slope. I have curly-ish hair, and she does a great job - its 40.00 with blowdry which is pretty darn reasonable, and its a really cute little salon. Plus, I can always get a same-day appointment - even on saturdays!
