I tried it and it was unimpressive and ridiculously priced. Plus they had big flat screen TVs playing ESPN. No thanks, I'll stick to the Tacqueria. Oh also, they charge $2 for salsa and chips!!!! Really ridiculous and insulting. Staff was nice though.

Big flat-screen TVs playing ESPN, huh? So much for the Coors banner not being a frat-boy thing! I knew that placed just screamed out Upper East Side.
Does anyone have a white baseball cap I can borrow for when I go try the place out? -

lol whitehats. 2 bucks for chips and salsa? absurd! that is so against the rules! chips and salsa are supposed to be offered up free upon sitting your ass down! as yosemite sam says: its agin' the law! -
Oh, man. Thanks for saving me from having to try that place out. Charging for chips & salsa is a crime not to be forgiven. Especially not on top of everything else.

Yes, the staff was very, very nice. But get really annoyed when they fawn over you, asking you every 5 minutes, "and how is your enchilada?" I wanted to say (but didn't), "it's an enchilada (and a mediocre one at that), now leave me alone."
The atmosphere was OK. The people at the bar seemed to be having a good time. The music selection was odd: they kept going back and forth between Buena Vista Social Club and the Beatles Abbey Road, and that's it.
On a scale of 1 to 4 Burritos, I give it a 2.25. -
Flat screen TV's playing ESPN...This is great! Finally, a place in the neighborhood to get a beer and watch football games. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Somebody called this, right? Or was it just my husband who kept complaining to me about BVSC? -

I THINK it was Alafarnaidia (sp?) ... (but I'm not entirely sure). -
Aha, I searched. It was her, in the other thread:

actually, celine dion would make me vomit. but I will give the place a chance.
though this seems more like the joint to have an el vez impersonator floor show.
so. their soundtrack. any votes for buena vista social club, the mexican restaurant's favorite (busted) way to access sexy hispanic culture?
By my husband always complains about it, too... I wonder if the restaurant will find this board... I can stand the music, the sign, and the ESPN, but $2 chips and salsa chills me. -

I'm too lazy to hunt down the original thread, but the Celine Dion reference brought back some scarring memories.
In Montreal there's this place called Nickles (I think it might be a small chain, not sure) that's kind of like upscale diner food. The place is filled with '50's kitsch and formica. I went there with some friends and while looking over the menu, one of them asked, "WTF is with the non-stop Celine Dion bullshit on the stereo?"
I flipped over the menu and noticed a statement that basically said that Nickles restaurants were created and are run in the spirit of Celine Dion and that all the food and decor was created to embody who she is and what she stands for as a 'thank you' for the gift of her music.
I'd like to say that I threw my food on the floor and ran screaming into the Canadian night, but no... I finished my burger and left a little bit dirtier, a little bit more used with my spirit that much more hollow.
Stay the fuck away from Nickles if you value your soul. -

whoa, that WAS me!
I may still try the place, mostly because so much mexican food in this city sucks big time. my standards for mexican food have dropped big time since I moved here. and it did smell good. but I'm going to wait a bit -- at least a few weeks -- to let them settle in.
chips and salsa for $2 at the bar with beer is one thing, with a meal -- well, that's not so cool. but it's very manhattan. usually for $5. -
I'm not a foodie, so I won't bother rating my Friday night meal there, but FWIW, I didn't pay for chips and salsa and the staff was very attentive.
Howdy, Stranger!
