DAILY HEIGHTS in San Francisco
Hey! Great news. We got invited to go out to Webzine 2005 (http://www.webzine2005.com), an independent publishing conference, THIS COMING WEEKEND. We are going to talk about Neighborhood Blogging, Citizen Journalism, and all those other buzzwords:
(Look at all those Cali bloggers... Daily Heights is proud to exclusively represent the East Coast!!)
<Panel>
Around the Corner: Neighborhood Blogging
Commentary and discussion about blogging in a community bound by geography.
* Mike Lin, Potrero Hill, San Francisco
* SFMike, Civic Center, San Francisco
* Sean Bonner, Metroblogging, Los Angeles
* dailyheights.com, Prospect Heights Neighborhood, Brooklyn
* Eve Batey, SFist, San Francisco
* Dani Eurynome, Beast Blog, East Bay & Oakland
* Moderator: Ryan Junell, san francisco, texas, and beyond
Still not clear exactly what we are going to talk about - any ideas? Should I explain the history of El Carneviento? The ProHo Gaffler? The Bake Sale/Raffle/Rock-Paper-Scissors/Catan Society?

PS. Emcee of the conference is Justin Hall; old-timers of the Web may remember him from "Justin's Links from the Underground" in the mid 90s.

Cool! I feel like the Gaffler nabbing and the Carneviento poetry were our "finest moments." Or, if you want finest moments without the ironic quotes, how about the $613 we raised?
-
The A-2-THA-G debacle comes to mind, though that was confined to the message board.
-
I would think that some mention of the various discussions we've had here about the proposed Atlantic Yards project would be in order.
So does Justin Hall still use the term "Media Gadfly" in his own bio? -

Oh naaaaassty. [gags on vomit] -
This is great--glad you're representing 718.
Dailyheights' interaction with other local blogs and big media (ie NYT) would likely be of interest; something of a food chain seems to be evolving. It's particularly encouraging that Times writers have sourced DH a few times. -
They asked me to write some questions for myself, and give them some URLs to show:
QUESTIONS
What is Daily Heights, and why did you start it?
How much awareness of the website is there in the neighborhood, among people and businesses?
What about local media? Do they keep up with your website?
How many people contribute to dailyheights, and how do you get them to contribute?
How does the online community impact the "offline" community?
Is the site able to pay for itself?
How important are the message boards? Do they impact what you put on the blog?
Why do a separate blog and message board - why not just use the comments function of the blog?

Neighborhood blogs: amplification effect. Daily Heights serves as feeder for local megablogs and traditional news outlets.
1. anonnewswalker reports a car fire on Dean Street: http://dailyheights.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=874
In message board discussion, somebody from building across the street posts a link to a photo collection on mac.com. Resulting blog post:

Blog post gets picked up by Curbed, among others:

Such as Gawker, which sends 500 visitors per hour to the site: http://www.dailyheights.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=897
2. Rhodamine reports that someone in Prospect Heights siphoned gas from his car: http://dailyheights.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=722
Resulting blog post: http://www.dailyheights.com/archives/2005/08/rogues_gallert.html

One topic that really stands out in my mind is the discussions about race and gentrification. Someone could write a dissertation about it!

You can talk about how the forums basically ate the blog and then took over our lives, speared on by the critical mass of bored computer addicted alcoholics.
