Wait, Isa, weren't you wearing a Pixies tee at the bake sale? Maybe you are the most qualified of the ersatz hipster ethnographers among us.

    Please, edumacate us :)

If any of these resonates with you, watch out...

    Bettie Page haircut
    Ironic mullet
    PBR
    Artforum
Ex-Williamsburg resident (Colonial Williamsburg does not count unless clothing was ironic gesture)
    David Eggers
Alt comics: Janeane Garofalo, David Cross, Todd Barry, Eugene Mirman, et al
Alt bands: too many to name, dammit: Conor Oberst / Bright Eyes, Flaming Lips, any Elephant Six band, Fiery Furnaces, Death Cab for Cutie, and on and on and on.

Methinks a lot of people will be drinking
I think a hipster would scoff at that list.
  • I could totally go for a little Panama right now...
t-fal wrote: [quote=Muk]I, too, love Elephant Six, but have been listening to The Hooters and Loggins & Messina all day to get the pendulum swinging the other way :)

(Note, that was a decidedly unironic smiley emoticon.)

[quote=t-fal]aw please don't lump elephant six bands and the flaming lips into that... my liver cannae handle it cap'n, i doon'hae the poower!

*dear readers, notice how i cleverly tied in a star trek reference, in a completely unironic fashion, as proof of my non-hipster cred.
i see your loggins and messina and raise you a diamond dave era van halen.
  • All of you hipsters are going to be so drunk...

Maybe too drunk... maybe we should work in compensating factors.

If you wear a tie more than twice per week -1
If you wear a tie without a buttondown shirt more than twice per week +5?

There's a lot of different types of hipsters. You've got the corny indies, the aging ones (see: "Losing My Edge"), the "I only listen to German minimalist techno and wear black" pretentious types, those who aspire to have their pictures on Last Night's Party/Cobrasnake/Misshapes' photo gallery by dressing like a fucktard, the underground rap listening/ironic party throwing ones who buy all their stuff from Nom De Guerre, etc. There's a lot of overlap and permutations of all the types. The only thing they have in common is being annoying and cocaine which makes them more annoying.

your favorite band is coil = stick to diet coke

The most prominent tip off is that your thoughts will all begin with "what the the fuck?" Examples:
"What the fuck, that guy is wearing an unbuttoned woman's blouse?"
"What the fuck, that guy is not making eye contact with anyone?"
"What the fuck, that guy hasn't washed his hair in 8 days?"
"What the fuck, that guy is paying $3000 a month to live in a squat?"
    and finally
"What the fuck, what am I doing here?"

Also, they say they are from where ever they lived last, usually Portland or San Fransisco. They forget to mention that they are actually from Erie PA. Although sometimes they have an unnecessasry amount of pride in their hometown if it's a really down and out place. Because don't forget they grew up poor!

So we get you and Carnivore to stand next to eachother- what's the problem?!
You are so going down next week. I was totally constrained last night by lack by alcohol!

hah! I did tell you guys about the totally unfortunate hipster I saw in Soda several months ago, right? he was wearing, I kid you not, a stained, dirty white linen suit with flip flops. a foppy hat. his hair situation was totally unfortunate: a hipster beard and long, stringy, greasy hair. and he had some fugly, ripped t-shirt under the fucked up suit. and he was like walking around looking at everyone in that baffled, did my cab get lost on the way to bedford sort of way.

Totally on target. One look at Cobrasnake speaks exactly to your point.

ah yes, but this gives a pass-nay-a boon, to that rare breed (in nyc) of hipster: the mod hipster.

we must be fair and strike both mod and rocker hipsters down with equal impunity.

Ooh...I've got one of those at my job. A mod hipster Republican! Where's a stray lightning bolt when you need one?

True, but you've got to respect the mod hipster a little more. It definitely takes more effort to have that kind of panache.

well yeah, obviously, because if i were to become a hipster, i would totally be a mod hipster. the clothes are far better, and i wouldn't have to relinquish my bourgeois hygiene habits. the basic nature and rules of the wardrobe means less continued investment as trends ebb and flow. also, if you decide to smack yourself silly with a good dose of reality, instead of amphetamines, you can just stop ratting and laquering your hair, go a bit easier on the eyeliner, et voila, a look worthy of normal human interaction. sort of like bizzaro day to night barbie.
  • Uhhh... I just did a google search for cobrasnake to see what the hell you're all talking about...

    Now I know...

All I can say is- WTF?

I take back all accusations of hipsterness and I apologize with utmost sincerity...

Vindication is mine! For those still confused: These are hipsters. This is me. Me no hipster.
  • hmm, something tells me i should open that link 'o hipsters at home... might not be work safe. would hate to get a hipster rep at the new job and all that.

  • "You wouldn't know our influences. They're mostly German."

    "Kraftwerk? Falco? Hasselhoff?"

That picture on Last Night's Party is HI-larious. It's like it's so ironic that it's gone past ironic back to just sad.
  • "You wouldn't know our influences. They're mostly German."

Gotta love that movie! One of my favorites! Still Jack Black's best role and how can you keep from smiling whenever Tim Robbins is on the screen?!
  • I will volunteer to demonstrate if anyone needs an example of a dorkster.
  • candicissima, I don't think those are hipsters - those are tranny-leaning club bois. it is my experience that queer hipsters and straight hipsters frequently don't mix.

    Too true. This is closer:

  • I don't think that guy qualifies as a hipster. He seems to be wearing that outfit in an entirely unironic way (as evidenced by the wood paneling behind him). He kind of seems more like just a douchebag.
  • Or my new favorite a "wankster"
  • [quote=bluedove]Too true. This is closer:

Ok, so NOW, here we have Jesus to the right. Does that imply that this hipster / douchebag / wankster (to the left) is wearing "Jesus Pants" (I tried to get to Soda on Wednesday to scope out the pants, but was unable to ... so the question is still roiling within my brain) ... :?

No way, dude. The wood paneling is itself being used ironically. Haven't you ever been to Welcome to the Johnson's?
