  • I will chime in for Crown Heights and Prospect Heights- so many train options (if you are in the center then A,C,2,3,4,5, and the Q) and good bus routes to different parts of Brooklyn. Compared to south Slope (which the definition keeps extending on) you are just as close to the park...Brooklyn Muesum, main library branch and farmer's market are nearby and the buildings/structures are sooo much more pleasing to the eye.

  • Park Slope sounds like it could be the area for you. Can't beat living near Prospect Park and all the other aforementioned spots.

That said your best bet would be to come to PS say on a Sat. ( take the F to 7ave, you'll be on ninth st.) and head in either direction, south or north, and check out the numerous Real Estate offices to get an idea of prices.

Do a google search or check here http://www.hellobrooklyn.com/

    Greggers,

I'm only echoing what the others say--Park Slope sounds like just what you're looking for--but I wanted to add my voice because I lived in Astoria for four years when single and know EXACTLY what you mean. It was safe and cheap, with good grocery options, but it was really just somewhere to sleep and keep my stuff. The Slope definitely has a lot more going on--you don't need to go into "the city" on weekends here.

  • If BZ Grill would open an outpost in Park Slope, I'd say it would be OK to move from Astoria. Otherwise, I'd stay where you are. The last remaining neighborhood in the City with real beer garden - who needs prospect park? Astoria Pool? Museum of Moving Image?

    Really, explore Astoria some more.

One good thing about Park Slope: it's easy to rent a Zipcar to travel to Astoria for dinner (at BZ Grill, of course).

My friends looking to live alone in both Manhattan and Park Slope found better deals in Manhattan's Alphabet City -- studios for around $1400/month, which I think is a load of crap. Soon anyone making less than $200K will be living in cardboard huts along the Hudson.

Park Slope is a much friendlier neighborhood than Astoria. I like a few Greek restaurants and grocery stores in Astoria, but otherwise think it sucks. Some of my friends who lived there moved into apartments with bedbugs and argued with the landlords for months about it -- and their rent was not cheap.

The Mayor and MTA staff should hang their heads in shame for the horrid subway service that Astorians must endure. Don't get me started or I'll get so angry thinking about it that I'll punch the crap out of my computer.

Not true, especially if the person has a studio. I know several people in PS that pay less than 1600 and they have 1 bedrooms. I have a friend who pays 1300 or 1400 and she also has a working fireplace, and is in prime park slope.

also, you could try Prospect Heights. An easly walk from park slope and a few hundred bucks a month less in rent for the same amount of space and plenty to do.

well dave i guess you are right :p. but those places are none market places. they are pretty hard to find and if they are found they are gone probably within hours :p.

  • you can easily find stuff for 1600 and under around here. When I moved here in may I went to Berman realty and they had two 1 bed rooms which were around 400 sqf that were priced 1650 - no fee and 1610 - with fee. Both were on 8th ave by flatbush and that wasnt even their studios and thats just one company. If you look you can find stuff thats not completely overpriced in a great area very close to the B/Q and 2/3 trains.

also im going to check out a studio on st. marks by 4th ave thats 1295. Just dig.

Possibly, but my current apt is juuuuust over the amount the OP is willing to pay, and I found it, dwelled on it for a few days before taking it. And I looked at a LOT of places at the time and found a few others in the same range. I think it just depends on how hard you're willing to look. Then again, I have been in my place for 2 years, so maybe times have changed a bit.
Still, Prospect Heights should be at least little less (than PS), and a really nice place to live with close access to just about everything we have in the slope.

  • Just to add, right now would be the best time to find a deal. Once I started moving in the winter I found I could always get something a hundred or two less a month.

  • congrats

    How much was it?
  • congrats, hehe but i dislike bh cause i ts a bit too conservative for my taste and way too quiet.
  • I worry a little about the neighborhood being too quiet. But based on the price (see below) and the size (it's about the size of my one bedroom in Astoria) and the location (it's one block from the water), I couldn't pass it up.
